FIKE AGENT f . via, HEALTH LEGISLATION One of the biggest things, coming be fore ttievnext General Assembly is' the health of two anil one-quarter millions of North Carolinians. For a lon time these General Assern: blies have been buying . more or less oi mat commooity Known as puuuu health.- Just how much ' they got no one ever knew. Why? Simply because no one ever kept any book showing what the state 'or ? any of t'ie towns or cointies saved in need less deaths as ar result of making these appropriations. Why should not health officers be made to show whether or not they are worth their salt? Doubtless many are, but what about the others? If a health officer is a paying officer to a town, county . . . i j i i : e ; or state it snouia oe juiuwu, u ucia not, that fact should also be known. But how are ; the people to know, how can they tell whether or not a health officer is worth his salt? Easily enough. A health officer's business is to reduce sickness and prevent deaths. Now, if this com ing Legislature will , pass a vital statistics law, in a very short time every intelligent citizen will know how the death rate in his town, county or state compares with death rates in neighboring towns, cc u ities and states. . Likewise he will Know about the death rates for particular diseases. Then it will be easy enough to know when and where and how much to appropriate for,, or when, where and how much to cut down on public health appro priations. Let's have a vital sta tistics law and know the facts. N.
