SYLVA, N. C., AUGUST. 7 1914
$1.00 THE YEAR IN ADVANCE
IN ELECTRICAL
DEMONSTRATION
Cullowhee, August 1.
On Friday nignt, the -24th,
we
had at the auditorium a very re
markable entertainment and lecture
given by one of the Cullowhee stu
dents. Geo. C. Cox," of Cullowhee. It
was remarkable in that he had
made every one of the instruments
himself, and seemed to understand
thoroughly the principles and theo
ries on which they worked.
The entertainment was opened
by a talk on the wonders of this
great force of nature; then followed
the display of vacuum tubes which
was very beautiful, showing the va
rious flame discharges through the
different gases. Concluding the en
tertainment was the demonstration
of the High Frequency Current"
which consisted in passing the light
ing current through two 'of the coils
and which was discharged under a
tension of millions of volts. Brom
all the metal parts of the coil could
be seen the discharge of Electricity
into the air similar to the lightning
discharge which showed the high
voltage of the current He then
allowed this high current to' pass
through his body,A discharging
through a glass tube he held r in his
hand. Another interesting experi
ment was that of lighting brightly
by High Frequency Current; ail - in,
candescant -electric'lamp which
was short circuited , by & large piece
f m i 4 M
oi copper wire m tne $nape oi a
ling and which had no connection
to any part of his instruments.
He also expected to demonstrate
the wireless control in which sever
al devices were to be controlled by
wireless, but as he failed to com
plete a necessary instrument to be
used in its operation on account of
the short time in which he made
all his instruments used in his dem
onstrations, which was two weeks,
the wireless control was not dem
onstrated as intended. It is very
remarkable what this young electri
cal experimenter has done. His in
struments are carefully and beauti
fully made, and he has a remarka
ble future before him.
PRESIDENT'S WIFE
AT POINT OF DEATH
Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, wife of the
president of the United States, lies
at the point of death.
Four months of -almost unbroken
Iness, a complication of nervous
ailments and Bright's disease, have
sapped the vitality of the first lady
of the land. The end is regarded as
a matter of days, perhaps hours.
Her husband and three y daughters
are at net bedside and relatives
have been summoned, Physicans
have been in consultation for days
and it was admitted at the White
House that hope for recovery had
almost vanished.
