The many friends of Lieut Ram

much interested in the following

Friday, April 1st.
Dear Peg: I don't know what
you have to werry about just now,
so I will give you something new.
I am now up at the front, listening,
to the big guns and the shells going
overhead. At present I am in Bel
gium, a country I have always
wanted to see, but hardly expected
to be so lucky. Today three of us
ate dinner in a Belgian home. We
were the first Americans they had
ever seen and asked us if we would
nave cunner witn tnem. rney are
still within the fire of the Germans,
but have never left their home.
Within sight there are a few shat
tered walls standing, which is all
that is left of a city of 35,000. Not
a person remains there, nor a build
ing with a roof or four walls. It is
quite remarkable that these folks
should have escaped. All around
the house are shell holes, but we
had vegetables they grew in their
garden where many, shells had fal
len. Perhaps you may have once
read of a church that was totally
destroyed but that a crucifix at the
door that remained untouched. I
have also seen that.
But the best news of all is that I
have today fired my first shot at
Fritz. It was an eight inch Howitzer
and they surely do tear up tilings.
I am receiving quite, wonderful
ent up here . and am staying

BIBLE CONFERENCE POSTPONED.
Owing to present existing circum
stances, the war and financial strain,
it is thought wise and best to post-
bone the Western North Carolina
Bible Conference..
T. F. Derrz, Ch'm.
all, for I shall be far away from any
firing line before you will have re
ceived this and will not be up here
again. Also, you would be surpris
ed to see how well we insure our
absolute safety. They really enjoy
having shells come over and work
schemes to get Fritz to fire. It is
real pretty at night and seems more
like a Fourth of July celebration
man war.
We have been having some rain
during the last few days and as you:
have heard, it gets quite muddy up
here.
This has been a wonderful exper
ience for me up here and I regret
that I shall so soon have to be leav
ing. Perhaps Mother is not quite so
sorry as I am. I really don't think
any Qf you worry very much, for I
believe you realize that I am just as
anxious to enjoy my good health as
you are and am not going about,
making a target of myself. I am
taking good care of myself fronv
every standpoint, and while I should
like very much to stay on up here,
you may relieve your own minds
by knowing that I shall be far away
by the time you get this letterr
The Spx Mother made for ire have
just reached me and are fine. Also
I received the white pan I left at
home for a sample and a few pieces
of Hershey's.
You people must not worry about
me in the least, ior I will bi back
home just as soon as this little
"scrap" is over. Love to all.
