Queen celebrated his 71st birthday; Master Cecil Pat rick Luverne, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Saunders, was born that day. Appropriate exercises were held at the graded school, and prizes werel awarded for the best stories told of the life of Washington. Miss Edith I Coward won the prize in the primary! grade, Master Frank Mehaffey in thp 6th grade and Miss Katie Kenney in I tlio 7th grade. Snpt. O. S. Dillard, I of Sylva was present and made a very interesting talk, which every one enjoyed. I)r. C. Z. Candler, of Sylva, was in Balsam Monday. Mrs. Adalide Crawford celebrated her 77th birthday the 23rd. A(i de gant dinner was served. In the cen ter of the table was a beautiful cake decorated with 77 candles, made and presented by her grand daughter, Miss Sclma McKay. There were sixteen children and grand-children present.] She received many nice gifts. May site live to celebrate many more birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. T. M Rickards left Tuesday to spend some time in Fla. There is right much sickness in Balsam, especially among our older citizens. Mr. Geonre T. Knight attended Teachers' Meeting in Sylva Satur day. / Mrs. Manda Blanton of Hazel wood visited her step-daughter, Mi's. Will Reed last week. Mrs. Reed lias been very sick for some time. Drs.
