Through the in terest of Lawrence Spmnt of \jfil f niinington, the famed Orton planta tion of Colonial days is to demon strate to Eastern Carolina the pos sibility of a return of the turpine in dustry to this section. Mr. Sprunt and his father have protected thousands of acres ofyoung longleaf on their estate and now have timber of a size that will yield a handsome revenue from turpentine operations. Through the cooperation of the U. S. Southern Forest Experiment Sta tion and Forester H. M. Curran of the State Collegte Extension Division an economic method of tapping1 the trees is to be tried which will not in jure their growth or mar the beauty of the plantation. A modified Ameri can motfiod is to be used, cup and i gutters to replace boxing and the new details of operation perfected by U. S. Forest Service in the Florida National Forest to be applied in a North Carolina Arest for the first time, . i *'Xo more important step for the | 'future of our turpcntinie industry hntJ been taken than this demonstra tion on the Orton plantation," says i'orester Currans, "District Agent E W.
