JACKSON CD. JOURNAL DAK TOMPKINS, - - Editor Published Weekly By the TAOKtfON COUNTY JOURNAL CO. Entered as second class mateer it Sylva, N. C. "Coolidge Hooks Five Trout," screams a headline; and that's called news I "North Carolina is The Banner State of the South"?Herbert Hoov M. AU hail, Carolina! The old North State passes New York, and is now the leader in the sisterhood in payments of taxes to support the federal government. : News Item: Mecklenburg, Haywood and Buncombe, three of the big Dem ocratic eountiest of the state are said to be going to lead the fight for the repeal of the absentee ballot law, when the general assembly meets. Perhaps he is referred to as the Dry Czar because of the Russian maimer assumed by some of his agents. We eaught more than 25 trout one day this year and narry a daily paper mentioned it. Mr. Coolidge caught j five and it was the leading news of! the day. Dollars to doughnuts our trout were as good as his. ? ' ^ | U I These evolutionists and fundamen-1 talists tried to kick up a rumpus by staging a debate in Charlotte. North Carolinans went on in the even tenor of their ways and the thing fizzled out by reason of non-support. Now these National Association of What doyoucailits are tryinp to force Sun day Baseball, and such on us. The hope is that they[ will play out from the same cause. The truth to tell, Sunday legislation may not be con-1 stitutional; but North Carolina 'is reasonably well .satisfied with the way Sunday is now observed, and with the laws concerning it; so why should the Whatdoyoucallits worry about it! HIGHWAY 106 Highway 106, the Wade Hampton Memorial Highway, the Smoky Moun tains Park Trail, the Cullowhee road, or whatever name you wish to call it, is destined to become one of the most traveled roads in the moun tains. It has always been the most important artery of commerce for Jackson county. It has been the route over which a large and rich section of Jacksofn county comes to market. It has been the chief support of Sylva. , ' '?> | It is written in the stars that this road must continue on to the South Carolina line, and that South Car olina must carry it on to the sea, to Charleston and Savannah and Au gusta. Over it will come the thous ands from the Southeast who wli visit the Great Smoky Mountains Na j tional Park. It is a part of what will be a great highway leading from the ' South, through the mountains and ! the park1 to Knoxville and the mid I die west. Geography made it as it is. If Jackson county is to continue to [grow and expand and progress, the' | county must increase the value of ? taxable property. That is obvious The best way that is now in sight to that end is the development of southern Jackson county, Cashier's Valley, Hamburg, Mountain, Canada those provinces where nature broke her apron-strings and ^uured out in-j calculable blessings, and beauty and grandeur. The first step in that de velopment is the building of Highway 106 into one of the great higwhays of North Carolina. There lies our duty. There lies our opportunity. There is pledged thej j promise of the Sylva Chamber of | Commerce, of the people of Sylva, i and of the state highway commis sion. PARTY PICNICS A party of young people motored to Robbin?:\ 'lie Sunday and enjoyed a sumptuous picnic dinner on ihe road. Those composing the party were Miss Mary Enloe, Miss Inez Richard^pn, Miss. Einclyn Daniels, Miss Nellie Cowan, Dr. Robert Bell, Messrs. Dan Moore, Scroop and Reginald Enloe, Mr. and Mrs. Enloe Moore and Misses Louise and Ellen | Black and Marian Bryson and Messrs. C., Chamber of Commerce, stating that plana are being made for a joint meeting of the highway commissioners of South Carolina and of North Carolina, at an early date, at High Hmptoan, on the old Sloan Turnpike. The object of the meeting is to lay before the North Carolina road au thorities the plans of the people of the two states for the old Sloan Turnpike to be taken over and placed on the map as a part of the state highway system, and to get surfacing on the South Carolina end of the road. The Sloan Turnpike, leading from Walhalla to Cashier's Valley, has been renamed the Wade Hampton Memorial Highway and is attracting much coment throughout; the south east as it is designed to shorten the distance from many SoQthern cities to Cashier's Valley, Sylva, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and to Knoxville and Tennes see points. : ? o REPUBLICANS NAME COUNTY TICKET The republicans of Jackson county met in convention, last night in the court house and named their ticket for the fall campaign.
