HARKINS NAMED CLERK Of WESTERN DISTRICT Judge E. Yi Webb appointed Thos. J. Harkins of Asheville as district at torney for the western district of| North Carolina. The Asheville man' will bold the place under temporary appointment until the Department of Justice has taken permanent action. Mr. Harkins is a Republican and for \ u number of years was assistant dis trict attorney. Reoionization of the western district was made necessary by tbe creation of a middle district at the last session of Congress. MRS. SHELTON DEAD Mrs. Mahal a Shelton, widow of the late S. J. Shelt;on, died at her Pigeon street home in Waynesvillc, this morning at 1:30 at the age of 84 years. " One sister, Mrs. J. L. Ferguson of Whittier, N. C., and six children sur vive W. T. Shelton, Mrs. C. E. Ray and Mrs E J Hyatt of Waynesvillc; Mrs. I. E. Rhinchart of Asheville, Mrs. F. A. Anderson of .Johnson City, Tenn, and J. C. Shelton of Los Angeles, California. All her _children except hereon who is in California were with her when the end came. Funeral will be held Friday after noon from the Waynesville Metho dist church of which the dcceasej had been a member and supporter since childhood. Waynesville Mountaineer. March 15?Today was the largest in North Carolina tax history with the books showing a total of $2,092,073.55 credited to incoinc tax collections." The figures were abont a million dollars ahead of collections for the same date last year. Revenue Commissioner R. A.
