The South Pole, which has been hitherto only twice attained, is the objective of Commander Richard E. Byrd in the most carefully planned voyage of exploration ever made. Commander Bjnrd is departing from New York in his Antarctic ship, the Samson, accompanied by fifty-five volunteers, among them such heroes ot' the air as Bernt Balchen, Thomas Mulrov and Harold I. June. Commander Bvrd is taking three planes with him. He believes the Ant arctic can be conquered by the air plane just as the Arctic has been conquered. He has also 'purchased for the venture an iron freighter the Chelsea, which is in New Zeal and. The Chelsea will be used mainly \ to transport the supplies. After leaving New Zealand Bvrd will establish a base on the Ross Ice Barrier, about 1,000 miles from the |H)le. A self-supporting settlement will be established here and the Sam son will be sent back to New Zeal and to prevent the loss of her by crushing in the ice. Byrd will estab lish bases from the Barrier to the Pole, 100 miles apart from each oth er, to be used in ease of emergency. When the bases have been laid, Byrd will fly toward the Pole in his tri-motored monoplane named after Floyd Bennett. The South Pole is on a platean about two miles high, which makes it very difficult for an aviator ? as the air is very rare, and the landing speed must therefore be very great. Thus, special care must be taken to preserve the landing skiis of the plant1, the demolishment of | which would make it difficulty if not im possible, for the flying party to re turn to the base. The trip will also be devoted to scientific study, tnth a special maj> ping camera used t>, chart the regions explored.
