I "5 In the United States, a day set apart annually, and appointed by; the President and by the Governor of the various states for g iving thanks to God for the favors and mer cies of the year past. It is essentially a harvest festival and owes its origin to the Pilgrim Fathers. Despite the lean harvest of the summer of 1621, Governor Bradford decreed' a day of Thanksgiving and rejoicing after the scanty crop had been gather ed in. This example of sturdy faith spread to New Englana colonies. There was plenty of roast turkey for the hunters found "great store" of the now famous Thanks giving bird in the neighborhood of Plymouth. t ^ President Washington issued a proclamation recommending that November 26tb, 1789, be kept as a day of "National Thanksgiving" for the establishment of a form of Government that made for safety and happiness. , -> President Lincoln, in 1863 appointed Thursday, August 6, as a day for National Thanksgiving praise and prayer. / ? / - - / * Since 1864, the last Thursday in November has been proclaimed annually by the President as the day of National Thanks- giving. > Now Boy Scouts you have just as much to be thankful for as our forefathers, good homes, built by the Builders Supply and Lumber Company,, Good health, a good Thanksgiving Dinner, above all a good Scout Master to lead and direct you in your lives.
