i JACKSON COUNTY JOURNAL DAN TOMPKINS, Editor Published Weekly By The 0ACK8ON COUNTY JOURNAL CO. Atfsred as second class matter at tfce pest offiee at Sylva, N. C. President Hoover proposed a mora- j lorium for war debts. Somebody out in the West is proposing the same for wheat growers. Why not accept the proposal we made months ago, tod declare a general moratorium for Bread is certainly not the staff of Ufa Itr the farmers of the West, with wheat selling at 25c and 35c a bushel. The mercury has been hitting a high hundred and wheat a low 25c in the Middle West, during the week. A compromise between the two ex treraes would be most welcome. The hitch-hiker is frequently the down-and-out who believes in taking everything the (Jood Samaritan has, including his life, his car and his pocketbook. Cam Morrison and Tain Bowie cam paigning for the United States Sen at* over the land and sales tax prob lem, would present as ridiculous a spectacle as a man running for al derman of a rural village on a plat form of high tariff. What the people are really looking for ia a senatorial candidate is an honest, intelligent man who is for tha folks, regardless of the big pow er interests. The equalizing board has cut out some 1,933 teachers off the payroll, and eliminated 52 high schools and 413 elementary schools.. When Gov ernor Gardner said cut he meant cut. uo' ki';ks, please, from the people who, a few weeks ago were demanding tax reduction. The French withdrew their troops from Germany, months ago; but they are still keeping the watch on the whme. lfarr Einstein and others, repre senting themselves as speaking for] the intelligensia of Berlin, cable the Governor of Alabama protesting the execution of Negroes, convicted of A&taalting white girls. In the first j place, we can't understand why they, feel called to help administer the laws of Alabama, or what they think they Lave to do with it. In the second place, it strikes us most forcibly, that Berlin fans troubles enough of her own to keep all of her population busy and if the "intelligensia" of, Berlin, including Herr Einstein, is so smart, why don't they solve the prob lems that threaten to overcome Ger many, before they begin regulating the administration of justice in the Ktate of Alabama? MURDER! Ttw large and increasing number of homicide cases appearing on the dockets of the superior court in Jaekson county have become a re proach to our county and to our people. It is not the purpose nor the in-1 tention of this paper to try murder cases, nor to comment ujkhi any par ticular case, because this is the pro vince of the courts and not of the newspapers. However^ the murder menace has grown in this county to such an ex tent that it has become a disgrace. There are but two remedies: One is to inculcate iiUo the people a wholesome, horror of murder; to teach the young that murder is murder, and that not in brawling and killing, but in good fellowship, good will, and respect for the rights of others, licsgUpM manliness. That is the pro rUVvf the home, the school, the ne^paper, the church. The other i^ to measure adequate punishment tf those who tak? the lives of their fellow creatures. That is the duty of the courts and juries. Who can remember, among all the murders that have darkened the record of Jackson county, when a jury has returned a verdict of murder in the first degree, and he who took the life of man has forfeited his own to the organized laws of man? It has been bo long that only the older people can remember when capital punishment was meted out by a Jack son county jury. Quick, stern, speedy justice, and that alone will stop the red tide that has and is sweeping over this county. Publie sentiment must be aroused against the unlawful taking of lm mau life, and juries must do their duty without sentimentality creeping into the jury box. The great Creator breathed into man the breath of life; and the same Creator wrote with his finger, upon the tables of stone: "Thou shalt not kill" A LARGE UNDERTAKING On Juty 1 the new road law be came effective whereby the State of ! North Carolina assumed the entire I burden of the construction and main tenance of all the public roads and highways* in the State, relieving the counties of that burden. Every thinking person will recog nize that it is a tremendous under taking. Not only that, it is also an experiment, never before tned in any State. The people must bear with the highway commission until it can be gin to get its ducks 111 a row and its machinery functioning properly. The {commission is as anxious as anvbodv i to make the North Carolina plan work out, and to provide the best j possible highway facilities for the I people. j The Journal believes that an honest 'effort will be made to cope with the problems presented; and that a glo : rious success will be the result. At any iate we, along with all other North Carolinians devoutly hope so. REVIVAL TO BEGIN AT. SYLVA BAPTIST CHURCH ON SUNDAY Revival services will begin at the Svlva Baptist church next Sunday morning. The evening service w ill be held in the Methodist vhun-h at which time Rev.
