. tKS J A IKSON COUNTY JOittNA i Publisher; Weekly By DAN I * iPKINO ?at?re?l as saeocd das* matter h lie Peal Oflict at Bylra* N. 0. AN TOMPKINS, F.iitor 1 Sheriff of McDowell county ana deputy were seriously wounded by a trap gun, set by a man to guard his liquor supply in a filling station at Marion. Marion policeman, beater to death by a drunk, was taking to j-til. NOISY SYLVA! The Journal has heard complaint from people who live on the Main Street and who have their offices 3long it, that there is too much noise. Horns of automobiles are blown without any reason for it, and many horns have a too loud and harsh horn sound. Bells on -trucks are rung up and down the street and many other noises that distract people from their work are heard. One physician stated that he sometimes finds it difficult to examine his sick patients because of the niose on the streets. The more quite a town is, the better most people like it. Parking In Sylva The problem of parking in Sylva has become a serious one. Not that _ there is not enough room tor everybody to park, but that the available space for parking is largely taken up, ihrougout the whole city the whole day, and much of the night, by local people. This leaves little or no space for the traveling public, in case any of their number should desire to stop over here for a short time, to make a purchase, eat a meal, or spend the night. People traveling by private automotile are not going to put in a long time looking for a place to park, just to get to stop iii Sylva. If they can see no handy space, they will drive on to the next town. Thus the town that has no place for the public to park wift lose much of the public's i ousmess. It has resolved itseli* down to a question of cold cash. The town is that has resolved to provide a place lor people to park is thereby extending a foreeiul invitation to the plublic to stop and spend money. Just now how much money Sylva has lost by reason of crowed parking space nobody can estimate, but it must amount to a tidy sum. The best solution is for people of Sylva, who work in Sylva and drive to their work, to park their cars on the side streets such as Maple, Walnut, Spring, and Jackson. The walk from any of these to places of business is short and would cause little inconvenience. On the other hand, it would leave several blocks for the traveling public to park .If we should try it this summer, the volume of business done in local cafes, drug stores, groceries and other places of business would materially increase. This should be done by voluntary action of the people of this community. Barring such voluntary action, a thirty minute or one hour parking ordinance on Main Street would have the same effect. People driving through town are worth nothing to us. They are only wearing out our streets and highways. It is the ones who stop and spend their money that are helping build our towrn. If- Sylva really appreciates the business of the country people and he tourists, we will leave the parking space for their use, when they come to town. For Representative I announce my candidacy for Representative in the General Assembly, subject to the action of the democratic primary. If nominated and elected, I will serve the people of the county and State, to the best of my ability. I favor the reduction of taxes on homes and lands, by taking the present tax for social security from that class of property, and paying it out of the indirect taxes collected by the State, and by such economies as can be effected without injury to the efficiency of State and county governments, and their agencies. As President Roosevelt recently pointed out, all property should be made to pay its just share of the cost of government. Tax-exempt securities should not be allowed. The homes of the people should bear the least heavy part of the burden. I favor expanding the work of old age security as rapidly as it can be done, without working undue hardship upon the taxpayers of the State. It must be remembered that money does not grow on trees, and every cent that is paid out of State and county treasuries for any pur. Pose, must be collected, directly or indirectly from the people. The time / has arrived when more adequate I ncilities must be provided to meet die expanding needs of Western Carolina Teachers College, our State institution in Jackson county. Having been a member of the General Assembly and an officer of the General Assembly, I have had opportunity to learn the work of the General Assembly. If the Democrats of Jackson county desire me to represent he county, I offer them my best services, as the Democratic candidate, and not the candidate of any group, faction, or individuals. Should any jne of iny opponents receive more votesJn the primary than I do, I will be his enthusiastic and loyal supporter.
