Plant Disease Work t
Effective in Winter
Jl" . ?.
Contrary to popular opinion, a large
amount ol highly effective work can
be done during the winter months to
control plant diseases, says Dr. Luther
Shaw, Extension plant pathologist
o! State College. This is particularly
true of fruit trees which are normally
pruned during the winter period, he
stated. /1
v> ,4
The winter carry-over of many
diseases of apples, including scab,'
bitter rot, blotch, and fire blight can j
be greatly reduced by systematic J
pruning of the trees, using the latest j
improved methods and taking special I
precautions to prune out as much'
dead wood as possible, Dr. Shaw continued.
- t
An apple tree pruned so as to per- J
mit good light and ventilation is ren- ;
dered less vulnerable to attack by i
disease-producing organisms, and can j
be more thoroughly sprayed an'd con- t
sequently better protected from the j
organisms than a tree with thick;
growth. - Destruction i' of diseased \
leaves and fruit on the ground by dis- J
cing, plowing, or other means, is also :
highly desirable, i .. j' !
The plant pathologist pointed out:
that same practices are equally ef- j
fective when applied to peaches, :
pears, grapes, and small fruits such
as raspberries, blackberries, and dewberries.
It is especially important to destroy
the dried or mummified peaches
which were infected wtih brown rot
the previous season and left hanging
on the tree or on the ground under,
