Of these three were white and the others EXCELSIOS ITEOS. Soctbtort Leader: : Having seen two issues of your neat little paper, I concluded to congratulate your effort in building tip Southport in particular, and Brunswick generally. It appears j to me that a long needed advertising medium may be found in the Leader, and if people will only embrace the! opportunity which it offers, and make it a success, it will indeed prove a blessing indeed, and will keep them informed on many topics which is impertant that they should know, and lend its aid in developing the re: sources of our grand old county. i Allow me a short space to say some thing of this section feof the countyi vtjp here in the norh western part of Brunswick, separated from Columbus county by the "Waccamaw river, is a little township of the same name, "writh a! votiug strength approximating two hundred, with as healthy climate, and as productive soil as can bef ound in tn the county, the uplands having in most portions 01 uie vownsiup a souu I clay JoundMion, u sceptibie of i i A m A 1 f it . . 1 ' 1 I high state of cultivation, by proper drainage and manuring, but the prin cipal resource is its numerous rich swamp lands, which by a small outlay of money can be utilized, and made paying dividends. We havle also much valuable timber, consisting of the nitr.h nine kn miirh nriy.fd fnr tar and turpentine and lumber) and the cypress so nseful for shingles and many other purposes. But with all these numerous resources, our conge nial climates and healthful waters, we are much in want of the means of transoortation and educational facili- ties, thj people with characteristic in dolence have learned to depend upon i Lvii . L nitj puuiic isciooi sysiein, as uie enure means of educating their children. Limited as the what ; is worse, school fund is, and ofteri ini''.diciouslv managed; the poor child seldom gets more than six or eight weeks school ing in a year, j j Hoping great success to the Leader in its noble adventure, that it may be a means of stimulating the good citizens of Brunswick to : a higher sense of their duties as citizens that a spirit of progress may take hold in their minds aud urge them onward until we stand solidly in the front rank, as a free, independent, virtuous and enterprising people. I; remain, Truly! yours, Excelsior. j SIIALLOTTE ITESS. At this writing, 31st March, the weather is superb, and more highly appreciated after the touch of equinox we have had for the last few days. Farms are being put in .'first class condition, and the gardens are well advanced. You have heard, doubtless, of the hnrninrr nf c"i runner her wharf, here, on the night! of the 23rd jf March No greater calamity could have befalkn our community. and the adjacent country, as it was our chief means ox communication with the ontside world. It was cvi dently the work of an incendiary, and the authorities are on the warm trail of the cowardly criminal, j She was owned by Captain Allen Moore nd Sheriff Rouxk, jointly.
