Any of their goods will be repaired at the Factory for half the usual price 1 We wish to return thanks to some ! of our exchanges, for their courtesy in j copyiug editorial matter from the Pine ? Knot reiatiVe the merits of Southern Pines as a health resort. We mention particularly the News f- Observer of j Raleigh, and the Star, of Wilmington. : It is this broad spirit of helpfulness . that will do more for the growth of North Caroliua than any other force thai can be set to work. We have received a copy of the An niston Hot Blast's Piedmont Fair edi tion. It gives an exhaustive review of Annistons great and growing in dustries, sketches of her leading men, and glowing prophecies for her future. The illustrations are numerous and well-executed, and the descriptive matter fitly sets forth the industrial marvels of Anniston, the Admirable. We are glad to note that this great en terprise is so largely the work of a North Carolinian, E. A. Oldham, bus iness manager. What a pity about the weather ! It couldn't have been a worse time for the Fair. ' Orators in danger of burst ing with suppressed eloquence, pump kins yearning to show off, horses anx- J ious to display their speed, everybody and everything in a state of nervous expectancy, which the steady, ' business- like drip of the rain does not soothe to any great degree. Well, brethren, we must view this matter in a philosophic light, and con clude that it is all for the best. Who knows but that, if we had been blessed (to speak after the manner of men) with good weather, our fair would have been such a blazing success a&to puff us all up with that "pride which ! ?oeth before destruction." j ! .Our townspeople will see by the j "Answers to Correspondents," in an ! other column, the character of the in- quiries which come to the editor of this paper. He always answers such inquiries by private letter, giving the ; information that is desired. But may ! there not be many who know of South ern Pines through the Pine Knot, I and see so little local business repre sented in its advertising columns that ; they become disheartened and tujn ! their attention elsewhere ? We hare never complained of the support giv- , . . . en tne jtine ivot oy peopie xu wwu we have no cause for complaint so . far as subscriptions are concerned- ; r but wouy it not be greatly to your in- j , o j j t t j a(Jd to the TOrosoeritV of OUT leresi anu auu 10 me prosperity ot uui town, . if iyou would advertise' your busiuess? Nothing so convinces the. public of the success of an individual or firm as a standing advertisement. KEEPS HIS HEARTHSTONE WARM. There is a man living near Dan bury, N. C, who forty-live years ago married and determined that so long as he lived his hearthstone should never become cold. To this determin ation he has adhered with a persisten cy amounting almost to superstition. He has never slept from home a single night, has never tasted food from any other board except his own, and never atany time had a match on his premises. The fire has never been permitted to burn out in the fire place, nor has he ever used a gill of kerosene oil, bought a pound of can- -dies or any thing else for the purpose of lighting his residence, which boasts of only two windows, or rather two holes cut in the logs of which his house is built, about 8x10 inches; the roof is of boards and has only been replaced three times during the forty five years. He has been three limes married and is the father of fourteen children, all of whom are married but three. He has great-grand-children, but the number of his descendants we have been unable to learn. He is still in vigorous health, and jocularly tells his wife that - he expects at her death to marry again and raise an other i'rrnXv-llenry XeicH. . . - ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS, Prospective Settler. No, we are not surprised at your mistake. It would be perfectly natural to conclude, after looking over the Pine Knot, that there were no grocery, stores in town. There are, however, two. You, of course, notjeed the advertisement ou first page of L. A. Young's stock of Fancy Goods and Notions. Prospective Boarder. We agree with you that the idea a stranger gets of our accommodations for Visitors is rather vague. You saw the advertise ment of the Prospect House, so it will be unnecessary to mention that fur ther, except to say that this first-class house has increased its facilities over last season. There is another hotel here and a large boarding house. Prospective Builder. We are glad to refer you to the 1 advertisement of Mr. S. N. Rockwell, Builder and Con tractor, in the specimen cop' of the Pine Knot which ha een sent to your address. Notice also the adver tisement of Eaglesfield's brickyard. A. K. P., Bath, Me. If you' wish to purchase a small farm, "as your let ter states, we advise you to corres pond with a reliable Real Estate Agent like Mr. P. Pond, whose adver tisement is always to be found in the Pine Knot. Business Man.- We're aware tnat our advertising columns should give yoa an idea of what business is done here, but must acknowledge they do not. If,. however,, you will read the answers to correspondents given above, you will gain some idea of what wei have here in the way of business. In ad dition to those named, we will men tion that there are other .enterprises here, such as planing mill, jewelry store, &c, &c.
