Is there any real profit to anyoie from the sermons of Sam Jones, ex cept perhaps to the Rev. Samuel him elf? Of what use is it to people w 10 want instruction in spiritual things to listen to the slang, coarseness aid buffoonery of this man? Is any deep er knowledge of- life's true purp se gained from his utterances? Is there any true or noDie saying oi ins tnati i&j not spoiled by the garbage of spoiled anguage with which he surrounds at? We venture the assertion that lor every impure thought that he drives out of the minds of his hearers he sug gests ninety and nine that are; wprjse. Read the report of one of his sermoas. It is fairly riddled with expressions that you would ,not tolerate in your own home. Every few senterjees there is "loud applause," or "pro longed laughter." Is it possible that people whose religious life is anything Cheap Nursery Stock. For Winter and Spring Sales 1 887-8. I have a large stock of more than skin deep can encourage or even tolerate such buffoonery in the pulpit? Is it conducive to spiritual growth to be always on the grin? I Dp .... I ; people laugh- when the profounjdest issues of life, are at stake? This man Jones is doing immeasurable hJtrm. The modicum of good that may result from his preaching can be. but the small dust of the balance. We have observed pretty closely, but have pil ed to discover any great movement toward a higher life that has come from the preaching of this notoious evangelist. All honor to those men who feel a solemn obligation laid upon -THE SOUTH'S OPPORTUNITY. The efforts made to enlist the aid of the railroads in attracting immigration' to the South by low rates has met with success, and it is announced that on February 28, March 13 and 27, April 10 and 24, tickets will be placed on sale at all points North and West to all points South, good to return in thirty days, at the rate of one and one half cent per mile each way, with stop over privileges. This is one of the .most important movements ever made in behalf of the South's development. If the railroads and the business men of the South will now unite in widely advertising these special rates, and thus work up a great interest through out the North and West, the rush of people South will be something won derful. It will not do to depend sim ply upon the general announcement of low rates as made through the daily. press. There must be earnest, vigor ous work to make these special efforts effective. The whole North and West, ought to be flooded with special adver tisements until people everywhere be- become interested. Some will go for' pleasure, some for eniasity, some on business, and some to make caref u I investigations, that they may learn for themselves of the resources and advan tages of the South. The first and most important matter is to induce them to go. This ean easily be Ac complished jby judicious and libera 1 advertising, and this ought to be done at once. -Manufacturers', Record.
