Farm work is progressing finely. People are fast laying-by their corn crops, and will soon finish their cotton and then go fishing or hunt for shady spots, we can't say which. . The turpentine business is fast be coming the most important industry in this community. The buyers seem to be in good spirit, as they continue to raise their prices. Messrs. Kelly & McNeill are now paying 2.00 for yel low and 2.50 for virgin. We consid er opposition a trrand thine, in nnv " J lou" smce anu 'e judged, by the cus- J tomers, that thronged the streets, that j there was an enormous trade carried ! on, considering the location, j We learn that Jesse Page, Esq., made some onions, this season, the circumference of which were about 10 J inches. News extremely scarce. Forkade. j As I have not seen any items from these parts, I will endeavor to report 'the latest. ) Our neighbors are very busy hil ; ling" corn; some of which is very fine. The worms injured the corn during tue sPrinS season very much, though believe they have withdrawn their ; forces and emigrated .to other quar ' tcrs. -J Cottou is better than it has been for ! many years past. And all our farmers ;. are wearing a very broad smile nowa ) days, with one exception, and that ! one is our famous "grass killer," who j declares that it will rain as soon as j ihe clouds roll by, and I presume he ! will come out victorious, for he digsM from earlv morn until dewv eve. j Would give you his name but he has I the advantage in stature. We have some sickness in our com- frounity. Mrs. J. W. B. Thomas is still s suffering with that dreaded disease, consumption. Some of our neighbors pride them selves on gardening. Our friend J. M. Hunter, was showing us some fine collards, one of which measured three and one half feet in diameter, and says it is not near grown yet. Crab. BROADWAY. The third quarterly conference for Cape Fear circuit was held at Nashville on the 5th inst., Rer. J, T. Gibbs P. E., presided in his usual able manner. Mrs. A. B. Kelly who has been suf fering about ten weeks from something like paralysis is thought to bo better. We have been luxuriating on water melons the past week. Seasons were never more favorable to growing crops than they have been the past spring and the present sum-! mer. Say to "BM of Aberdeen, go ahead and gather your huckleberries, we'll vouch for the snakes, as we don't think they are much fond of huckleberries anyway.
