The Democrats ad vocate a tariff for revenue only, and the Republicans a tariff for protection. While the protectionistshave legis lated to enrich the Northern manufacturers, they have put" a little protection on sugar to juiet the easy consciences of some soft-shell, so-called Democratic Congressmen from Lousiana. and have, pretended to believe that State was so wedded to the protection idea, that it would desert the Democratic; j column whenever the tariff on Sugar was reduced to a ! revenue basis. The tariff on sugar and its manufactures last year was about H'2 per cent, and paid into t he Treas ury #56.507.4*5. savs Sena tor Vance. This is a tax of about one dollar on every man, woman and child in the whole country for the pro tection of a few sugar ma kers in Lousiana. The Mills tariff I»i 11 now before (' >n gross as a Democratic measure re-j duces this duty on sugar and the Uepublieans thought the Louisiana Democrats would b«* mad about it ami break ranks but they didn't. The Republicans nominated a full state ticket and went to the people on t heir protec tive policy platform and got left by a large majorty. The Democrats, on a plat form endowing the adminis trator of Clevelaml. and. de n landing a redact ion of the a rill on sugar, havec :ri> d tli * • Stale by •».
