Horn m Lincoln, he has always resided there and m Catawba, where he is held in ttie highest esteem and edjoys the fullest contidence of all the people of these two and the ad joining counties I find that they are proud of the position he holds in the State —it is a reflected honor upon old Catawba, the banner coun ty of Democracy. The political air one breathes here is exhileratin«r. o Ther* id no grubling, no complain- ' ing, no political apostasy. Catawba Democracy is of the best and purest type. If some of the Alarmists who, with water in their eyes, think the State is going to elect a Republican governor in November, would spend a day or two in Catawba, they would return home ashamed of their sickly and unmanly fear. The Catawba J I Democracy has no such word us fail in its Tocabula.iy —and neither has the North Carolina Democracy if the croaking of timid men could be still ed. Success is in the air—Catawba will roll up an even increased major ity for Alexander, Fovvle, or Sted mau, which eyer one is nominated ; 1 name the aspirants alphabetically ) for Governor, in the November elec tion. 1 »ut it is not of politics that 1 pur pose writing to-day. I saw the pulpit arid pews in the German Reformed church (which, by the way, is a gem of a church, built mainly through the generosity of ex Senator Abel A Shuford) made by this company. More beautiful work 1 have seen no wheie. A speciality is made of work in hard woods, and the finish ing of the Bank of Hickory and the residence of Mr. I). W. Shuler can be surpassed by no company. "Hickory Tavern" years ago gave place to a better hotel. Last year that was burned, and in its place a beautiful brick hotel, contain ing three stories and a basement, is being erected. It will have the modern conveniences and will be a pleasant place for tourists who do not care to go beyond the moun tains; but who aie looking for a de lightful climate and good water. There is no f*ood reason why Hicko • J ry should not have a number of summer visitors when this hotel is completed. It will get them. The new hotel will cost about $20,000, and will be owned by a stock com pany. Something over two years ago Mr. D. \V. Shuler, of Wisconsin, opened the Bank of Hickory. He came here with plenty of money aud start- Ed a hank which has succeeded re markably from the very first. He is now building him a residence which is a model of beauty, elegance and convenience. I have seen no house in North Carolina which com bines so much of architectural beau ty with foinfoit.
