Messrs. G. C Bonniwell and J. D.
Elliott left Hickory Sunday afternoon
for Newbern to put in a bid for the
erection of a large Custon House, U.
S. Postoffice and Courthouse building
in the aforesaid city,
Mr. H. S. Suttlemyre the evening of
the 7th inst. was taken with an
attack of acute neuralgia and for four
days was confined at home. He is again
at his store but considerably enfeebled
by his recent sufferings.

Mr. C. A. Wilfongof Catawba Sta
tion, the father in-law of Mr. J. H.
Bruits,. went hunting Friday and re
ceived a fall bursting a blood vessel
from which he died in less than one
hour. The funeral and burial occur
red Sunday.
Monday afternoon Prof. Cole, taking
advantage of the snow, gave the
young ladies of Claremont College a
very delightful sleigh ride. The large
sleigh, drawn by four spirited horses
and loaded with a luxuriance of wo
manly loveliness, was enough to para
lyze the purposes of the most deter
mined monastic.
Fire broke out Saturday about 7
o'clock a. in. in the greenhouse of Mr.
G. C. Bonniwell and destroyed it
with all his flowers. Pecuniarily the
loss is insignificant, but to a great
lover of flowers the loss was serious,
and we extend to Mr. Bonniwell our
deepest sympathy in the misfortune
that has overtaken him.
The Ladies' New Church Society has
engaged the services of Prof. S. T.
Ford, the celebrated elocutionist, at
the'Opera House, Feb. 19 and 20, at
night. The proceeds go toward the
new Methodist churck in Hickory.
The lovers of a high grade of intellect
ual entertainment have a rare treat in
store for them. Let every body attend.

The election on the proposition of;
the City Council to establish water-
works in Hickory occurred Tuesday, I
and was overwhelmingly defeated by '

The La Gascogne, a French line pas
senger steamer with over 500 , passen
gers, and over due six days", thereby

and Europe, was sighted off Sandy
Hook Monday afternoon, slowly com
ing in but disabled. Her machinery
had broke four times. There was some
wild rejoicing.
Mr. Joseph Walters, our very capa
ble watchmaker and jeweler, is finding
constant employment for his hands.
He is filling a long felt want, resjond
ing efficiently to all thie. demands of
trade made upon him. He is an ex
pert in his special line and anyone
having work requiring the delicate
touch of a skillful mechinist, can send

that the vindication of Mr. E. W.
Powell is full and complete. The
damaging reports about him appearing
in our exchanges'last week, we clipped
with intention of publishing, but, be

At Blowing Rock Thursday night,
Feb. 7th, the thermometer registered
17 degrees below zero, with a heavy
and exceedingly cold' wind raging,
which continued without intermission
for two days. -It was. the coldest' wea-
ther for many years. Many wagons
from Watauga were caught in Lenoir
during the bh'zzard. They started
home however,, but could hot cross
tli9 mountain .because of, the snow,
which had drifted in many places from
