8 THE .SOUTHERN GOLD BELT. It Will in th Near Future Becom? Prominent in th Production of the Precious fletal. To the Editor of the New York Herald: In reference to the article in your valuable paper of January 29, treating: about the Southern gold fields. I wish to say that I fully agree with the state ment coming from Greensboro, N. C. In my capacity as a prospector for gold I have been, with pickaxe in hand, ov er most of the prominent gold fields the world over, and am fully convinced that in the near future the Southern States will take a prominent stand, in the production of the precious metal, although at present the surface has hardly been scratched. The Southern States are dotted with gold properties from one end to the other. The Virginia-Maryland gold belt, to which I have been paying con siderable attention the last few years, runs in a southwesterly direction through the middle sections of those States and continues its course into North Carolina, South Caroliua, Geor gia, Alabama, into Mexico. This belt covers at least twenty counties in Vir ginia, ami quartz veins exist of im mense size in Fauqu'er, Goochland, Louisa and other counties. Quartz tak en from .veins at different sections show by fire assay from $10 to $1,000 gold to the ton. Two yea-is ago I saw six hundred pounds of ore taken from a vein in Montgomery county, Md., near the Virginia border, -which yield ed $20,000 gold, this being a pocket. I have since been informed that the ore of this vein averaged $50 to the ton, at a total expense not exceeding $3. I believe it is bafe to predict that the Southern gold fields will before long revolutionize the world. Any one who made a statement ten years ago that the Southern States would hold a prominent stand as iron producers was ridiculed. Look at the iron pro duction of the New South of to-day. Important as has this iron industry become in comparatively few years, it will compare to nothing when once the gold fields of Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama will receive the proper attention from experienced and practi cal men. F. Berdeau. Cleveland, Ohio. Jan 31. 1895. Last Hours f Congress. Congress was in session last Sun day, same as any other day. Good for this Congress. Probably on the prin ciple of the better the day the better the deed. The Senate receded from -its adoption of an appropriation of half a million dollars to establish a ca ble telegraph line from San Francisco to the Hawaiian Islands. The House would not agree to it; and as it had got in on the modern plan introduced by the Republicans,' as-a' -"rider"' to some appropriation bill regular in its order, the House, where all appropria tions must originate, disagreed and would not adopt it. Only two, instead o three, new battle ships were provid ed for. A Resolution offered by Senator Wolcott,. as follows, was adopted: Resolved, That the following Sena tors be selected by the Senate as delegates to the international bi metallic conference,' if one shall be called, in the event that the bill creat ing said conference shall be signed br the President: Mr. Jones, of Arkan sas; Mr. Teller, of Colorado: Mr. Dan iel, ot Virginia. Senator Voorhees indulged in some very fine irony at the expense of Pres ident Cleveland much to the amuse ment of the Senate upon announcing the President's final remarks to this Congress Sa bien? The House was characterized by the largest attendance in the galleries, if such were possible, of the whole session. The 53d Congcess is dead. It came to a sudden stop: A cessation of hos tilities as it were. Marshal J. R. B. Miller is a model of ficer. His duties have been faithfully performed, always meeting the full ex pectation of his friends and calling forth th commendations of all classes of our people. He is happily constitu ted for the trying place he occupies. In him we find blended the highest elements of courage, and the instincts and manners of the true gentleman. He is efficient, honest,' capable:' in ev ery sense worthy the trust reposed In him, and it affords us pleasure to be able to mention him in praise. A severe rheumatic pain in the left shoulder had troubled Mr. J. H. LOper, a well kuowu druggist of Des Moines, Iowa, for over six months. At times the pain was so severe that he could not lift anything. With all he could do he could not get rid of it until he applied Chamberlain's Pain Kalm.I only made three applications of it, he says, "And have since been free from all pain. He now recommends it to persons similarly afflicted. It is for sale by O. M. Royster Druggist. riorcsnton Herald Clippings, Fb. 2$th. Col. V. S. Pearson has returned from a buniiesstrip to Raleigh. C. They spent a day at the Hospital here as Dr. Mur phy's guests. They went away saying this was the best and finest managed asvlum thev had visited. New York Stock Jlarket. Niw York, Saturday, March 2, It is satisfactory to note the quick restoration of the gold reserve and the pronounced success of the re cent Government bond issue. Since the syndicate commenced pay ing the yellow metal into the Sub Treasury on account of the new issue of 4 per cents, the Treasury gold has increased, from $42,000,000 to $82,000, 000, or more than four-fifths of the total requirement, and it is now only a question of a short time when the 100,000,000 gold reserve in the Treas ury will be fully restored. Taking the recent verdict on behalf of our National credit and as a vote of popular confidence, no endorse ment could have been stronger the course of the stock market for the week has been disappointing so far as securities having merit behind them are concerned. Three bull factors have effect upon prices next week, viz., adjournment of Congress, large March disbursements, and the present oversold condition of the inarket. Present current low prices of good securities seems to more than discount any existing unfavorable conditions, Yours Truly Haight & Freese Bankers & Brokers 50 Broad wa v. Messrs.
