On Yf-nr Six Months . Three Mouths AN UNPLEASANT DILEn.lA. Section 72 of the Election Law, applicable to our city election, which passed the Leg-islatme Harch 8th, is as follows: "Every candidate who is voted for at an public election, held within this State, shall, within ten days after such election, tile as hereinafter provided, an itemized statement, showing in detail all the moneys contributed or expended hy him. directly or indirectly, by himself or through any other person in aid of his election. Such - state ment shall give the names of the various persons who received the moneys, the specific nature of each item, and the -purpose for which it was expended or contrib uted. There shall.be attached to such statement an affidavit, sub scribed and sworn to by such candidates, setting forth, in sub stance, that the statements in the paper contained are in all res pects true, and that the same is a full and detailed statement of all moneys so contributed or expend ed by him, directly or indirectly, either by himself or through any other person in aid of his election. Candidates for town, village and city offices shall file their state ments in the office of the town, village or city clerk 'wherein they are candidates; and any candidate, who shall neglect or refuse to file such statement, shall forfeit his office, if any he have." Now, by reference to sec tion 37 of the Election Law, it will be seen that the Secre tary of State is required to furnish, at least "CO days before election, copies of this law to clerks of the Superior courts cf the various counties, to supply each county canvasser, clerk, register of deeds, sheriff, regis trar of voteis, and judges of elec tion with one copy thereof." However, as the law was passed March the sth, less than 60 days prior to our annual city election of May Gth, it was impossible for the Secretary of State to comply with the statute requirement; but as its passage rescinded the pre existing law, our only other legal warrant for holding an election, it necessarily follows that, unless the gentlemen now in charge of our city government, complied with its requirements, in filing bills of expense, as made and provided, within 10 days after the day of election, they are ille gally in office. It is an unpleas ant dilemma, we confess, but as wo are all subject to law, none being superior thereto, the fact is-the gentlemen holding offices, claimed under the recent elec tion results, should at once step down and out, for the old board is the only legal city government. New York State has been and may now be running this great Republic in its own interests, but the great American people are getting up a syndicate of their own. This country will experi ence the worst revolution in the history of the world if the gold single standard is adopted or at tempted to be maintained. Jenks: No sir! But he is a cuckoo, with a big K. lie talks about his betters as flip pantly as if he were a Mugwump. Like these Mugwumps and cuck oos: these Cleveland "Goliehar chists" who have Hocked oft and set up a little tin. headed political party which runs high handed the whole business, machines and all on the principle of rule or ruin. -They are at it with ven geance. But the people will meet them at the cross roads and Phil lipi. The Enterprise uttered the following last week: ''The editors of the two dry pop ulist papers of Hickory who brought up the rear end of the wet municipal ticket about a quarter behind the popular and worthy candidate for maj'or on the same ticket, are now taking a good deal of space explaining how it happened' lie knew it was false when he wrote it. This paper is not a dry Populist paper. Its editor did not bring up the rear end of the wet ticket; nor are we or have we nor do we intend to take up a good deal of space explaining how it happened. We care nothing for it. So the fact is the great Su perintendent of distillery gau gers has simply lied about us. Well, a cuckoo must do some thing to hold down his job under Cleveland's administration it seems and they have to pitch in to Democrats who are not cuckoos when they havo no one else to abuse. So let the red headed frawd take it out in abusing us. Rev. Maj. Jas. A. Weston Rec tor of the church of the Ascen sion met his Vestry in conference last Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock and decided to remain in Hickory another year. This was noble and self sacri ficing in this good man of God. He would have got at least a thousand dollars a year by accept ing the call to Christ church in Raleigh, but he finally concluded to remain here in Hickory where the Parish is unable to pay more than $30.00 per month. The people here are very much attached to Maj. . Weston, and thev are of other churches as well as his own, and he is also attached to them and takes a great inter est in the welfare of all classes of citizens. ' We think it noble in Maj. Wes ton to remain under the circum stances and extend to him and church our congratulations, upon the auspicious event and, happy ending. We wish him unbound ed happiness. The death of Hon. Walter Q. Gresham, Secretary of State in President Cleveland's Cabinet will no doubt be quite a severe mis fortune to the foreign policy of this administration. Secretary Gresham has been getting along very amicably in all foreign controversies and has inaugurated a policy quite Amer ican in its features which com mends itself to all lovers of Peace. Secretary Gresham was the best man in the Cabinet and it was his good judgement that kept the Administration out of much trouble. He died in Wash ington City Tuesday morning 1 :lo o'clock. laying with his head ou the arm of his daughter, Mrs. Andrews, and gazing in tke face of his wife. He had been in feeble health for some time from a succession of cold's and indiges tion and at last was pleuritic. J DUKKOURHAtt' Sin RDE-TTPCii t ztr.' W. D u Sor.rs & C a. Editor PiIkss and Carolinian : Hoping that a few items of news from this vicinity may interest nonie of the readers of your valuable paper, I shall endeavor to relate a few inci dents. The recent ' rainy weather has put people somewhat behind with their farm work. Corn is rather slow in taking a start to grow. Worms are very bad on the corn this spring. The wheat prospect is moderately fair. Wheat is threatened with rust, which is liable to be detrimental to late sowing:. The spring crop of oats seem to be fairly promising. Owim? to the un certainty of fall oats, there was not much sown. The fruit crop, so far, is quite prom ising. There are plenty of peaches yet, and if they are not destroyed, it will be the first crop in this section for some years. The latest sensation is that of last Thursday Ascension day. A party of young ladies and gentlemen from this section went to All-healing Springs, in Alexander county, where they met with a number of the elite of that vi cinity, and the two crowds together had quite a nice picnic. Dinner was eaten, and a few pleasant hours spent in rambling through the groves and plucking the wild flowers. The general health of the people of this neighborhood is very good. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sherrill, two aged cit izens, are in somewhat delicate health. Mr. Van Teague's three-year-old child has a slight attack of cholera morbus. W.P.H. Gunpowder, May 28, 1893.
