v - rtCiA.LD SUPPLEfr3iv Iri BURKE AT RALKIQH. NOT BUILT THAT WAT. W. a. Bandall, a Native His Work and His Studio. Raleigh Chronicle. There has not been, since the days of William Garl Brown, a resident artist in this city who possessed all the merits of a por trait painter, until W. G. Randall opened his studio here. Mr. Randall is a native of the State, having been born in Burke county. In early life he showed a strong disposition and exhibited the talent to. become an artist. Without friends or aid he has struggled by himself until his genius has carried him through all the fiery trials of preparation, and brought him the present high posi tion that he now enjoys. Mr. Randall has studied under the best artists of America, among them Prof. Wilmarth, at the Na tional Academy ; Prof. Ed. M. Ward, N. A., who was the best of his life class in Paris ; Artistic Anatomy under J. Wells Cham nenev. N. A., and Persnective un- der Fred Dielman, N. A. Realiz ing that it is only after years of study and practice that the por trait painter can hope to show upon canvass the highest qualities of his art, he went to. work sac rificing all, until until he had at- ; tamed a degree of proficiency that should enable him to achieve that success which is the object of his efforts. Mr. Randall's work speaks for itself. He has painted many fine portraits in oil. Among his sub jects are Bishop Lyman, Bishop Atkinson, Mr. Geo. Kidder, and Rev. Robt. Strange, of Wilming ton, N. C. In some instances as many as three paintings from the same subject have been ordered. He is not only a master of the brush, but of charcoal and pastelle as well, as his excelent pictures in these branches of the art will testify. Mr. Randall has been here about twelve months and has suc ceeded bevond his expectations in getting subjects. This studio has been over McKimmon, Moseley & McGee's store. Hereafter it will be over the store of Messrs. Norris & Carter, occupying the three front rooms, which he proposes to use for his classes in drawing and painting. He is a splendid teach er, his faculty for imparting knowledge being equalled only by his ability to instruct. Joe Caldwell Dont Want to Be Governor. Statesrllle Landmark. A number of the brethren of the press have been so good as to have lately expressed a desirt to see the editor of the Landmark Governor. He tenders to them his most grate ful 'thanks, but he would rather labor with them and continue to enjoy their good opinion as one of their number than to hold any office whatever. Saying this, he hopes not to make himself ridicul ous by declining something that is not apt to be offered; it is said with perfect sincerity and because something needs to be said lest-our partial brethren should think us insensible of this new evidence of their regard. Frankly, no political ambition burns or smoulders in our breast. We are not built that way. Besides, we hold too many un popular opinions and haven't policy enough to conceal them : believe in the whipping-post: oppose the present homestead law; not only believe in the present system of county government, but think judges as well as magistrates should be elected by the Legisla ture; don't believe there is any thing in the notion which is so popular now that a railroad com mission would cure the State of all her miseries hold opinions equal ly unpopular on half a dozen other public questions and couldn't whip around to suit popular sentiment; so that we would be certain to get beaten for any office outside of Statesville or Iredell county. Lack of desire united with unavailability rule the editor of the Landmark off the track, but with all his heart he thanks those friends who think him worthy of public position.
