ILTaCWcsrcwwti4 Successor to "The Morganton Star.' W. C. ERVIN, Editor & Ptjb'r. TW KiWSAft (IACTbTM, scssoto pese. $LC0 THURSDAY, FEB. 5. 1891. FROM WASHINGTON. 7 the Editor of The Herald: Washington, D. On Feb. 2. Mr. Harrison bas as hard a task before him in the selection of a successor to the late Secretary of the Treasury as his worst enemay could possibly have set for him : it is a task too in which the country at large is more direct ly interested in than anything he has yet undertaken. It will be very difficult to find a man willing to accept the place who possesses the ability combined with tne conservatism of the dead Secre tary; and what will add no little -to Mr. Harrison's trouble is the fact that all the prominent repnb licans in both House aud Senate who have beeu recently repudiated bv their constituents will be, in fact are already clamoring for the place for themselves. Whoever he selects he is bound to make new enemies in his party, aud be ing a candidate for a renomina tion that is just what he cannot afford to do. Besides this, the man selected will have to be sat isfactory to the business men of the country, or a finacial panic may be precipitated. . So far the men who are men tioned fort lie vacancy are just those who should not be selected. Representative McKinley can, it iis thought, have the place if he wants it, but he has high protec tion on the brain to so great an extent that his appointment would be a very great mistake, and one that would certainly bring trouble. Senator Spooner is talked of, but be is a lawyer and lacks the finan cial experience and executive ability which is absolutely neces sary. The others may be bunched in one bad, very bad lot, which includes Senator Ingalla, ex-Gov. ("Calico Charley") Foster, Repre sentative Cannon and that ex-boss, particularly known for ways that are devious Stephen B. Elkins. It has been a long time dying and numerous false reports of its death have been given out, but To the Editor of The Herald: Jkffkbson, N. C-, Jan. 28, 9l. I remember to have promised Thx Hbbaxd an occasional letter from Ashe. Since writing last, nothing start ling bas taken place in this bill conntrv. excent that a driver and his team were killed by falling off of Iron Mountain; and a catting near Ore Knob, is reported, in which one man was fatally wound ed. If true, this makes about a half dozen killings for this county inside of twelve months. It is time for Ashe to call halt along this line. As to weather, we tiave asuMuy snows as any place in the State have one almost every day. The last one did not drift much. 1 noticed plenty of small drifts from two to three feet deep. But thU is nothing to compare with the tee that can be found here any day. I shall not attempt to tell you how troublesome It is you would not believe it. This is a great grass growing country. Hence, everybody' baa as much milk and butter aa he wants. Butter is from ten to fifteen cents a pound. But flour U high enongh to offset the cheap butter from three and a half to three seventy-five. Corn is from sixty to seventy-live. Buckwheat fifty cents, or two and a half cent a pound for the flour. As to cab bage and such vegetable, I do not know bow they srlL The people give me all I want free. Bat if anyone thinks Ashe is the place to buy cheap horses, be is very mnch mistaken. They are higher here than they are in Burke and Ca tawba. The merchants of Jeffer son have no competition and con sequently have things their own way. I am now making my second round on this circuit. I leave home to-morrow for a sixly-mih ride, to meet seven appointment. Most of my appointments are in school houses, a fact I very mnch deplore. But I have the hope of building two new churches, if not three, this year. The largest church on this circuit is in a lew yards of the Virginia line. Many of its members live out of the State, in Grayson county, Va. Our country churches are crowded whentheice is thick enough to Dear up a horse, and toe lanes literally filled with snow-drifts. As to the town folks, they are not quite so devotional. Mr. Editor, if yon see our Pre siding Elder, Ber. R. M. llovle, How inexplicable to the mids of men are the ways of Cod! "Why," we are tempted to ask, "must It be that another fatlMel and devoted wife and mot ber should be called from our midst ? It is hard for 1 such radicals as Senators Hoar, I Aldrich, Edmunds and Spooner to 1 give up the .idea of intimidating . the South, but even they ac : knowledge that the thing is dead : and that no further attempt will be made to revive it. In conse- quence, the legitimate business of I the session tbe annual appropri ation bills is fairly humming in both House and Senate. The Senate by a party rote re- ; fused to amend the apportionment bill, granting what was so clearly the right of Arkansas, Minnesota, and 2Sew York one additional member to each, and passed the bill just as it left tbe House. Sena tors Davis and Washburn, of Minnesota voted with the demo crats for the amendment, and strange as it may seem Senators Evarts and Hitchcock of 3fow York voted against it. Brother Johnny Wanamaker will have to get himself a new hobby. His postal telegraph scheme, in spite of the amount of Government money be spent in tbe publication of views thereon, is as dead as a door nail. Tbe House committee on post offices will not even report it. ' Representative McCreary, who is regarded as one of tbe most con servative men in the Honse, paid his respects to Czar Reed on Sat urday in a manner that was qniet but severe. His committee For eign Affairs having been refused a day for the consideration of bills reported by it. The refusal to give this committee a day is but another error in the comedy of er rors which has marked the Fifty first Congress. It seems that the republican Senators will never finish making personal explanations of their eourse regarding the Force bill. Saturday Senators Blair and Tel ler had their turns. Kext 1 , Secretary Wiudom's funeral oc curred here to-day. All of the Government departments, the lo cal offices and the public schools were closed. There was consider able growling among that large class who make it a point to at tend every prominent funeral they possibly can, becanse the admis sion to the church was by ticket, and the tickets were only furnished to prominent people. The remain ing members of the cabinet acted as honorary pall bearers. Tbe resolution to discharge the House Coinage committee" from further consideration of the free coinage bill is liable to make tbe - largest sort of a rumpus in tbe House at any time, if that commit tee persists in its present efforts to kill tbe bill by delay. How not to investigate the sil ver kmIs eem to be tbe real vl ject of the Honse committee, which is ostensibly engaged in in vestigation. If this com mi 1 tee slurs over its work the denim-ruts in the next House will try their bands at probing it to the bottom. mm my respects, lie is some where this side of Ashe ville, and may return to ML. A.'ry rm raint Rocky A&he vale, Greensboro and Winston. He left Mt. Airy dew Year's day. This scribe piloted him up New river as far as Cres- ton. When last heard from, be was near Elk Park, with two over coats 00, and expecting to bny an- otner. lie Hopes to return some time in February, if he has luck. Verily, tbe itinerant's life has more in it than fried chicken. Thanks for the weekly visits, of the uesald. Truly, R. S. Abebxetiit. Bathirwid OeUaaa. To the Editor of The Herald: By appointment as agent for Rutherford College, I have just made a nurned canvass of Mor ganton. It is a time of depression in business, 1 know, and unusual calls are being made on the peo ple of the town. But it does seem to me that the work of the College, so widely confessed and so freely applauded over the State, ought to appeal with more effect to our own people. "Drumming" is not a pleasant business and ought to be unnec essary in case of a burned College of which Sen. Vance has said that it has "done more good than any other institution in North Caroli na," and the loss of which, says the Racket, "is the greatest calami ty that has befallen our section since the war. No matter how just a cause may be, its ceaseless representa tion becomes tiresome, and it is a task to me, even while remem bering that it is not a personal favor we ask, but the mere per formance of a duty to the unedu cated and indigent class of our fellow citizens. This is a Burke Institution a public institution. Of course we can't rebuild it except with the people's aid. I sincerely hope that every friend of education, whose eye this may reach, espe cially in Burke, and most espe cially the old students of tbe Col lege, will not wait; but at oate send such amount as he or she can to Dr. Abernetby or Capt. II. W. Connelly. As soon as I can obtain a list of contributors from some agents, I shall ask you to insert it in Herald. Very respectfully, W. E. Aberx&thy.
