C road, his cotton was raised and shipped by Mr. J. M. Newton, of this coun ty, and is the first bale ever raised in the county for market. Sheriff John HarreU and William Tones, town marshal of Forest City, tried to arrest two brothers, John H. Pari 4 RwUd Paris, blockaders, for selling liquor with out license, when John Paris re sisted and shots were fired. Wil liam Jones was shot by John Paris and crying, "Oh, oh!" fell dead. Then HarreU shct the murderer who ran out of the de pot waiting room and fell wound ed in the right shoulder. The blockaders are from Spartanburg. Rowland Paris escaped, but the murderer was captured. He was desperately wounded and died soon after being captured. ..The trustees of the State University met in Raleigh Wednes day, the nth inst. Dr. Kemp P. Battle tendered his resignation as president of the University, a position he had ably filled since the re-organization of the institu tion in 1875. The resignation was accepted. His resignation takes effect next June, The trustees de cided that it was best to have a president, and, accordingly, will elect one next June, at the com mencement. Resolutions of a character most complimentary to President Battle were adopted, after several feeling speeches, and a committee was also appointed to prepare suitable official resolu tions.
