Giles, of Font.. ra, has bought a lot from the Mor ganton Development Company on Meeting street, and will build a nice dwelling house this summer. We print this week the por trait of Rev. C. A Briggs. D. 11., the celebrated Presbyterian di vine who is to be tried by his church for heresy. We also pub lish Dr. Talmage's last Sunday's sermon in which he appeals to christian ministers to stop fight ing among themselves. The ser mons of Dr. Talmage, published as they are in full the same week they are delivered in Brooklyn, are very popular with many of our readers, many of whom do not have the opportunity of at tending services every Sunday. Some time last year Julius Bradshaw and Noah Chapman, who live in this countv, were ac cused of stealing beef'cattle from their neighbors and driving them to the Hickory market for sale. Bradshaw was arrested and after a preliminary hearing before D. F. Denton. Esq., was committed to jail in default of bond. The Capt. V. I.. Attention is directed to the advertisement calling for a meet ing of the Magistrates of Burke county in Morganton on Monday June 1 st. The High Peak district stock law election resulted disastrously to the friends of the measure. The vote was 7 1-"no stock law" to 39 "stock law." Married, at the residence of Jas. London, May the 14th, Mr. Robert Wilson to Miss Eveline Turner, all of Burke, Esq. H F. Kestler performing the ceremony. The Morganton Development Company has purchased a lot of wheel scrapers, carts, and plows, and will commence next week to open up their property on the East End. Our young friend John Becht ler, who advertises for crows, asks us to state that they are wanted for the Agricultural Department at Washington, and not for home consumption. Married, at the residence of J. L. Daves, Esq., on the evening of the eighth instant, Mr. John England to Miss Mary Lane, all of Silver Creek township. Mr. J. L Daves performed the ceremony. A normal school for teachers and a school of telegraphy will be opened at Rutherford College on June 2nd, and will continue eight weeks. Tuition in either depart ment 6 for the term. Board 3 per month. Mr. John H. Pearson has sold the lot on Union street between the residences of Mess. S. Huff man and W. F. Camp to Mr. Kistler, a Pennsylvanian. who will build a residence on the site. The purchase price was $1450. The Morganton and Table Rock base ball nines played an other game on the grounds of the Morganton Club last Saturday af ternoon. The came resulted, Mor ganton 60. Table Rock 11. Evi dently both clubs need practice. The subscribers to the capital stock of the Cooperative Building Association are requested to meet at the office, corner King and I'nion streets, this (Thursday) evening at half past three o'clock to elect officers and perfect the organization of the association. Mull's flouring mill, on Hunt ing Creek, two and a half miles from Morganton, has recently been overhauled and improved. The machinery from the Wilson mill in Morganton has been put into the Mull mill, and it is now mnninor on full time and doing: - t ' fine work. A good many Burke County teachers are arrangeing to attend the North Carolina Teachers As sembly, which will convene at Morehead City on June 16th and continue until the 30th. On the first page of this paper will be found an article giving full infor mation and an estimate of the cost of the trip. Every teacher ought to attend the Assembly. We are glad to know that Morganton is to have a gun club. Xo town of its size in the State perhaps has so many crack shots as Morganton, and the organiza tion of the gun club will show the public what they can do. Arrangements are now being made to secure suitable grounds for practice by the members of the club during the summer season. The citizens of Burke county, in response to the appeal publish ed elsewhere, will hold a meeting the mountains to South Carolina. l-ast .November Bradshaw made his escape from Morganton jail and joined his whilom partner in the l'almctto state. Sheriff Webb promptly offered a reward for the tugitives from justice, and last week he received a telegram from the Sheriff of Greenville county saying that he had arrested Brad shaw and Chapman. Requisition papers were prepared and deputy bheriff L. A. Ward went to Green ville and brought the prisoners a A II. . iu -uorgamon, wnere they were safely lodged in jail. Mr. 1 loft man is de scrvidly popular with his parish ioners, and they are now testify ing their appreciation of their pastor by arranging to erecting a handsome tone church on the site now occupied by the ancient wooden structure. Collett, who has been connected with the Cotton Seed Oil Com pany in Atlanta, has cone to Savannah, Ga., where he has been Mr. N. 1. Beck, formerly Mator of Morcanton. who now lives 00 his farm on Hunting creek about two miles Hast of town, attended services at the Morganton Meth odist church last Sunday, leaving his maiden sister. Miss Mary h. Beck at his house. When Mr. Beck returned home with his fam ily about one o'clock he found his sister sitting on the floor, her elbow resting on a chair, dead. Miss Beck who was about sisty years of age, had had heart dis ease for several years but had lately seemed in better health than usual, and on Sunday had been making preparations tor dinner only a lew moments be fore her death. She was a woman of tine character and of great piety, and her sudden death was a great shock to her family and friends. Iter remains were in terred in the town ectnetarr Mon day afternoon. Miller, a prominent lawyer and banker ot Adrian, Mich., who in company with a charming party of Michigan peo ple spent a part of last winter at the Hunt House in Morganton, writes a private letter to the editor from which we take the liberty of making a 'short estract to show Mr. Miller s opinion of Morganton as a winter resort. He says: It seems to me that Morganton has many gifts from nature, all tending to make it a most desirable location for a talk winter and spring resort. Its magnificent scenery with the mountains round about it. Us healthful air full of pure balsam. Us genial climate, neither too hot nor too cold, and its pure water all combine to make it the ideal location for a great winter health and pleasure resort.
