Sam Motz was killed instantly, Dob Michael was wounded in the arm and leg and Charley Motz was wounded severely. The trouble originated some three weeks ago, when Miss Mag gie Motz a handsome yonng wo man of Lincolnton, was delived of a child. The unfortunate infant happily died. Miss Motz had leen for some time a singer in the meting of Evangelist Fife, and the uncharit able at once charged the preacher with the paternity of the child. This was insinuated publicly, but the character of the Evangelist was saved by the declaration of the yonng woman, while lying ou her sick bed, that the preacher was innocent, and that a young man named Bob Michael was the guilty one. Michael occupies a good position in Lincolnton society and is the son of a wealthy and influential man of the county, a prominent member of the Preshvter.au church. It is said that the father of Miss Motz sent word to Bob Michael a few days ago that he must marry Miss Motz. This he refused to do, and it is furthnr stated that in this refusal he has the endors mentofhis father. It is furthur said that he bitterly denied the paternity of Miss Motz's child. However that may be, it so hap pened that Bob Michael aud Sam Motz, the latter a cousin of the unfortunate girl and a son ol Caleb Motz; yesterday started out in a buggy for a trip to the conn t-y. They had gone a mile from town they were fired umm sud- dedly by three men who were con ceaieu in tue woods as they ap proached. The County Commissioners are in session this week, revising the tax-list and hearing complaints. From what I have heard I pre sume the listing of the taxable property in the State this U an expensive luxury to the eco nomic auiance man. McDowell county is small, vet I understand the listing of the tax will cost about $500. If this is correct and holds goqd throughout the Slate, then that wise Allianr f ture which assembled in Raleigh itai inter devised a revenue act under which it will cost th- - pie of the State more than S;a.oao ia iiai me laxaote property.
