It is a subject of such importance t the farmers in this country par ticularly those in the trans-M.ssis-sippi states that any ncwscoeccfa. ing it is eagerly read and t!tcussc4 by them. If it is possible to elim inate the most serious danger which greatly threatens the farm ers of the west a prolonged drought when their crops most need rain then certainly it is to theinterest of the people at large to do what is neccessarr to bring about such a result. For Tears since the lose of the civil war one man has steadi ly and persistently advanced the theory that rain has and can be produced br a scries of violent ex plosions. This man is an enthusi ast upon the subject and he has spent over a score of years an! much money in disseminating his views and calling the attention rf public men to their importance. No amount of ridicule could dis courage him. I lis object was to benefit mankind and with this worthy project in view he has steadily persevered. This man is Hdward Powers, of I Me van. Wis. In iS;t he trote and pub lished a book entitled "War and Weather. in which he showed tht in almost every instance the great battles in which there was heavy cannonading had Ik en fo'tawrd ed by copious rainv A notable is stance to which he called attention was the battle f Itucna Vista fought on February a and sj. 1S4?. This was in the dry season in Mexico and there had been nj rain for several months be'.re the battle, and. with the exception f the three remkably violent show ers w hich fell immediately after the nK;J.nt. there was no rain fr several months afterwards The battle of Palo Alto and the seige of Monterey were also in the dry sea son and both were fallowed by heavy rains. It Is a formida ble array of historical facts whUh Mr. Powers has brought to add weight to his theorv and it was his collection of these and his untiring efforts which principally drew attention to the matter. He was present during the recent experiments made here by (rt Dyrcntorth, ami. although thry were not carried out strictly accor ding to tt.e plans he had teu. stui tney were eminently 1 satisfactory ta him in that thv certainly demonstrated that his theory, so long cherihed and expoundol. is practicable and will be of incalculable benefit to the agricultural interests not only of this country, but of the worU. NAMM. tut lists. The party arrived at Midland August 5. and by the th enough of the apparatus was in pitin for a preliminary test. The gas generators for inflating the bal loons with oxygen and hydrogen were not yet in running order, so that the balloons were not used, but a series of ground explosions were fired with rackarock powder, a very powerful explosive which is manufactured by the scientists on the spot from the separate in gredients. which are not explosive until combined, and so can be shipped by express or freight without danger and at ordinary rates. No rain had fatten here since the itth day of May, but about twelve hours from the lime the tiring ceased clouds began to gather and form a little to the south of the ranch headquarters and soon broke with full lorve over the field of operation. The rain continued three hours an! the rain gauge showed two and one-fourth inches at the ranch house. From this time until August s an almost continual "skirmish" was kept up in the attempt to keep the weather in an unsettled condition, and this effort met with success from some cause either natural or artificial for there did not a day pass on which there was heavy firing to any considerable amount but that at least a shower of rain fell. The second principal operation tccurrcd on the tjth and iSth days of Augusl. when several thousand cubic feet of hydrogen gas was fired in explosive bat loons with concussions which were felt with terrific force on the ground, although the explosions occurred at an altitude of con siderably over a mite from the earth. A heavy firing was at kept up from what t.en. Drrcn forth termed his "ground bat. tcrie, which consisted of stations on the prairie at several hundred Yards distance from one another where an electric dynamo dis charges and large boxes of rok powder, djnamitc and blasting powder were store!.
