There was a good attendance in the main building of the Inter state Exposition yesterday U hear the add re of Col. A. K. Mo Clure, editor of the Philadelphia Timtt. It it a representative audience, and embraced many of our best farmers, business and professional men. The Supreme Court adjourned and the distin guished Justices of the Supreme Court aided in giving hearty and honorable reception to the distinguished friend of the South. Col. McCIure was received with much applause and cheering tie is a tall, dignified gentleman, with a strong and kindly face, in dicative of interest for his fellows and dignified good comrai'edtip. lie has been a conspicuous tgure in American politics many years, having enjoyed the confidence and friendship of Lincoln and t ire--ley, both of whom he supported for the Presidency when they were candidates. Col. McCIure began his speech by saving that it was a great pleasure to him to meet the pe pie of the South again. Having often shared the generws hoapo tality of the Smth. he was gfad to meet the people in the midt of their own great exposition ol thetr own resource. Such ept:ins are productive of incalculaMe good. They would be ol value if thev did no more than merelv make your people acquainted wish each other and with their wealth,, One ol the greatest t dtflxul ties is to make people understand each other. It we had understood each other better we would have saved a great war. (Applause.) Many Northern people believed that those who talked war in the South were bombasts who would run when they smelt pw der. You believed we were money getters and would not fight lr our principles. I loth were mis taken. In a caucus in the capital ol my own State, while I was State Senator, when some one said that the women ol the North would sweep away the Smthern people as with a broom. I was hissed tor S-j-ing that the South would fight. Where, in this enlightened age, U there such insanity? Not a bale of cotton should be seat abroad. I want to see your cotton spwaj and woven by North Carolina in dustry. (pplause.) I want you to hear the hum ol spindles wherever there is a while cotton field. Then and then only will North Carolina husland Its wealth. Twelve year ago, the first les son I learned in North Carolina, and I learned it by ol-servation, was that the tide ol immgrati must turn from the selling sun to the sunny Southland.
