The flags on the Capitol and City Hall were at half-mast. this being the only ofliceial notice of.the event. There were many callers at the residence this morn ing. For several years the ex Governor had led a very quiet life, He wrote occasionally for the newspapers up to two years ago. For a year he had but seldom left his house. He has no doubt left some very interesting papers. A history of his life, upon data which these may furnish, would be of remarkalle interest. He was in the very heart of politics from 184.1 l- 1S71. In 1S64 a regiment of Georgians passing through Kal- eich sacked his printing office. Governor Vance gave Holden shelter at the mansion and took steps to punish the soldiers who thus defied law and order The next day Holden's friends sacked the office of a newspaper here, ed ited by John Spelman, which had expressed pleasure at the work of the Georgians. Holden always had strong friends here. The printers were trreatly attached to him, and to-day Raleigh Typo graphical Union, one of the oldest and largest in the South, attended the funeral. pathetically explained in one of his exquisite stories.
