From the J'rrrsand Observer t ac

Convention, which met in Raleigh
last Thursday, we cull the follow

The election of a permanent
chairman was announced in order
and V. S. Lusk, Esq., of Bun

by Henderson (colored) of Rowan.
Mr. Hancock, of Craven, nomi
nated H. L. Grant, of Wayne. Mr.
Grant declined in favor of Mr.
Lusk and he was elected by accla
mation and was conducted to the
chair by Delegate Henderson and
Mr. John Nichols.
Mr. Lusk then addressed the
Convention, reading a prepared
speech from manuscript. He ar
raigned the Democratic Stale gov
ernment for the past twenty year
and painted a dark and lurid pic
ture of wrongs and oppression.
He characterized the election law
as an outrage upon an unfortunate
and helpless people, lie declare!
that the despot's heel was upon j
the soil of North Carolina. Hi
speech was a continued series of
bewailings. which might well be
likened to a chapter from lamen

business. Then came the tempest.

proceed to elect a State Chairman
of the Executive Committee for
the ensuing two years.. This was
met by opposition from Mr. M. I.
Mott, who declared that it was
unusual, and not the business for
which the convention was ealled.
He demanded that the call signed
by Chairman Eaves be read. The
call was read by the Secretary. It
was a cali to elect delegates.
Mr. Mott then contended that
this was not the time to elect the
chairman. It should be done at a
future day. If this was done to
day there would be a full Mate
ticket nominated to-day also. It
had not been indicated in this
call that anything would be
done to-day save the election of
four delegates to the Minneapolis
convention. The party was not
going, to stand any deceiving or
any "clap trap." Mr. Mott claimed
that the proposed action was con
trary to precedent and called upon
the chair to rule the motion out of
order.
A considerable spat followed.

the former favoring the immedi
ate election of the chairman, and
the latter favoring the election of
delegates first. John Williamson
said it was in the minds of the
people that the revenue ring offi
cers were exercising too much
power in this convention.
Mr. Powers, of Richmond, de
manded that Williamson retract
his imputation with regard t
revenue officers, or else that he be
made to leave the convention.
Williamson said he would re
