Caroina Items of Interest from Nortli Points. ..Mr. Joseph Caruthers, of Pine ville, has a stalk of corn which has 31 ears on it. ..The Charlotte Oserzer says that Mr. M. F. Trotter got $3,500 damage (or injuries received in the wreck at Rural Hall last win ter, lie sued for $20,000. ..The Winston Sejiti;:ei says that J. C. Lawrence and Miss Antoin ette Flynt, of Rural Hall, were married a few days ago, after a courtship of twenty-seven years. ..John D. P'.atik, deputy sheriff and jailer, at Lincolntou, died July 27th of fever. He was buried by the Masons and the Southern Stars military company, of which bodies he was a member. . . In a sermon the other Sunday, I'ishop Rondthaler, of the Mora vian church of Salem, took ground in favor of the running of the elec tric, cars on Sunday. The minis ters association of Winston-Salem has been trying to have it stopped. ..The Greensboro ReeorJ says that Mrs. Eliza Boone, of Guilford, stepped on a thorn. She did not suffer much at first but in a few days the foot commenced swelling and became very sore and the doctors had to amputate it to save her life. ..The Hickory Tress and Caro-i-'iiJ! says the season this year in Catawba county has been very fa- voranle on upland corn, and it no drouth yet comes, there will be a good crop. Mr. A. S. Abernethy savs he has twenty-eight acres that will make a i.eco bushels. ..The Xewbern Journal says letters of incorporation are being gotten up for "the Ocean View Hotel Company" with the object of building a first class hotel or. the surf side of Ilogue Banks, opposite Morehead. The building is to cost $150,000. . .The third annual tournamont of the Greensboro Gun Club will take place at Greensboro August 23d and 24th. It will be one of the most extensive tournaments yet held. There will be $200 offer ed in premiu ms. All members of organized gun clubs in this and other States are cordially invited to be present. ..The Aurora says that it is re ported in Shelby that Jonas the man who shot Smith is hiding in Lincoln county and resisted ar rest. When an attempt to arrest him was made by the sheriff and his posse, one of the men was shot in the leg by Jonas, who escaped. A reward of two hundred dollars has I een offered for Jonas. . . A caboose attached to a freight train on the Winston-Salem and and Norfolk and Western Railroad jumped the track while crossing the trestle over the Dan river Wednesday of last week and the car fell into the river, a distance of thirty feet. Flagman J. B. Hamilton, married, and Mack Cockran, brakeman, were killed. Hamilton died instantly : Cockran lived several hours. Both men lived in Virginia. . .The Daily Sentinel, of Winston, handles the sheriff of Forsyth with gloves off for the non-arrest of Peter DeGraff, accused of mur dering Ellen Smith. The editorial says "In an awkward and un-bnsi-ness like way he (the sheriff) has sent out deputies to hunt for the offender rather than face a little possible danger himself, fearing if he should go the coroner might having to handle the carcass of a coward. No one can respect a coward. Can this sheriff respect himself?" ..The Shelby Aurora states that Messrs. Ladd McCurry and an ex pert miner, Leander Fisher, are meeting with success in digging for gold in Golden Valley town ship in Rutherford county. They are working with an increased force, since crops are finished, and use a stream as motive power in carrying off the refuse dirt from the deep pits. They wash the dirt by sluices from the stream whose channel has been changed to work in the gold mine. In one day four laborers gained 40 penny weights of gold, and they continue to find gold that pays well. ..The Newton Enterprise says that Mr. f. R. Gaither caught a negro by the name of Ben Bass stealinir a nair of shoes from his store. But he ran and got out of reach of officers. The houses which he was known to frequent were seached and dry goods, cloth ing, shoes, and groceries from Gaither, Smyre Rhyne and Co., Yount and Shrum and Wood in considerable quantity were found. He was caught Friday night in Mr. Dick Wilson's barn by deputy Sheriff, D. P. Yount and assist ants, taken before a magistrate on Saturday and committed to jail till next court. ..The Charlotte Xcics says: "When Mr. J. S. Spencer opened his box at the postoffice yesterday morning he found a postal card which reached him exactly fifteen years after it was mailed. It was addressed to the old firm of Spen cer & Allen, Charlotte, N. C, was dated Wadesboro. N. C. March 2, 1877, and contained the follow ing order : 'Gents: Please send 3) three boxes of C. R. sides im mediately. Yours truly, J. R. Bojrean.' The card exhibited no evidence of shipwreck in any ot the larire streams between here and Wadesboro, and Mr. Spencer is unable to account for its be latedness.
