The Republican State Conven tion meets in Raleigh next Tues day, Sept 6th. After that there will be music in the air. The Democrats of Burke are getting down to business. They are going to make a clean sweep this year unless all signs fail. "Who is Exum ?" was the ques tion last week. Exum has ans wered it. lie says he is a man wno wouu prefer negro rule to the .c -c nace naa Heretofore." Do uu ,ani 10 Know anything more awuiwuin: I In the accniint nf tVi 1 I. r L "vv-ccu- wgsof the Burke County Demo- cratic Convention . nnhlUf, i. , r .. . weeK, an important resolution was overlooked. Among the resolu tions adopted by the convention was one declaring "That we con sider the third party ticket nomi nated in this State as but a Re publican aid society, gotten up by designing men for the purpose of dividing the white Democracy, and thus securing the electoral vote of North Carolina for Harrison." That's iust the size of it, and those M.i . . 1 U1,3igu ujr ine u.aver- handled them roughtly and thev succeeded in doing the martyr act. We have no patience with that type of alleged manhood that whines and whimpers when some body turns the light on s me shady transaction of the past, but we have seen enough to know that there are men who have whined l'i--mst-Ivcs into positions they wnt worthy to fi!!, a. lve d n't pn.pose to assist in ;:ny such w ,ik. Were not many of them committed in writing and by public utterances to that coiiim? Can anyone put any confident e in a crowd that will resort to such dishonest methods to gain a point? Da the nominees of such a convention ex pect the votes of the honot people of the State with an example of such political rascality so fresh in the rah; !s of the people? We can m t bcflcvc they did If they had, they would not have headed their ticket with such a man as Kxum. (not to mention the others) and Kxum would never have said, as he dU last week, that he preferred negro rule in .North Carolina to Democratic rule. Col. Thomas George Watlon and Mr. Samuel Huffman arc gen erally considered about the two strongest anu most uncompromis ing, dyed-in-thc-wool Republicans in the county. Whatever is Ke publican goes with them. It h been so always. The presump tion, bolstered up by their actions and utterances, is that they are as much "solid Muldoons" now as in the past. And yet it has been the subject of remark that these two Republicans are awfully tickled over the third party idea, and that Mr. Huffman's store has been the general rendezvous vt the third partyitcs in Morganton. Co!. Walton attends the third party conventions and smiles the best he can at the third party speakers. and last Saturday he went to hear the Rev. Mr. Pat ton at Glen Al pine, and, we arc informed, was the best pleased man in the crowd. Everybody knows that Sam Huffman and Colonel Walton will both rote for Wilcox and the straight RepubU- can ticket, just as they always have aone, and everybody knows that they are only patting the third party candidate on the back be- cause they hope by tl.at means to divide the Democracy and clean "P the ranche.
