The Secretary of the Burke County Fair says that the racing this year will be particularly fine. The Registration books are row open. They will be closed at 1; o'clock (noon) on Saturday, October 29th. Governor Holt will speak Rock P. O., Burke county, has closed out his business at that place and moved to Maiden, N. C, Catawba county, at which place he will make his home. Mr. Wakefield has sold his property at 1 Table Rock to Mr. G. A. Lovin, who will do a ceneral merchandise business at Mr. Wakefield's old stand. Cards are out announcing that on Wednesday, Oct. uth. r. Thomas Sumner McBee, of Asheville, and Miss Sudie Wash ington Avery, will be married at the residence of Associate Justice A. C. Avery, in Morganton. Ervin and other Democratic speakers will address the citizens of Ouaker Meadow township at Oak Grove on the nieht of Tues day, Oct. iSth, of Lower Creek at Mt. Pleasant on the ninht of Wednesday, Oct 19th, and of Smoky Creek at Amherst Acade my on the night of Thursday, Oct. 20th. There will be speaking at many points in the county, out there are many who cannot get out during the day and all can at tend these night appointments. The local Democratic .Committee men of the various townships are requested to advertise these meet ings and arrange for a place for the speaking. Mr. Swink, from northern Cleveland, who was in Morganton last Saturday says that revenue officers from Catawba county made a raid on the moonshiners in liarse ana vicvciauu Ben's Knob last week, and cut up six stills for alleged violations of the internal revenue laws, ancr which they set fire to the still houses. He says that tne nre spread from the still houses to the forests and that on last Saturday a big section of the South Moun tain country was swept over by the flames and that the people nni in fun torce ncniintr iuc fire away from their houses and fences. He gave the names of young Tallent and a man named Prewett as among those whose still houses were burned. This extraordinary proceeding has caused great indignation among the citizens of the section referred to. The negroes held a big politi cal meeting last Monday night and thoughtful friends furnished all the liquor that was necessary . ,.c enthusiasm.
