Not Half of the "Gid eon Band" Business Yet Revealed Eaves to Send Negro Speakers into the Eastern Counties The Condition of Chief Justice Merrimon Again Bad State Treasurer Bain in a Crit ical State Estimates from the Four Parties as to How the State's Yote will Stand The Third Party's Chief Organ Makes an Attack on the State Guard Other News. Special Correspondence of The Herald. Raleigh, O, Oct. 23, '62. The Raleigh Centennial week was certainly the handsomest and most successful affair of the sort on record in this State. There was perfect weather and that was a great advantage. So one of all the multitudes of visitors here lauea to express admiration of the street pageant. The slate was the most successful in the en tire history of the state agricul tural society. And all this in 1S92, a year when there has been so much talk of hard times. It goes to show that the people have some money left. They have lived economically this year; more economically thanjn twenty years, and have raised tEeir crops with less expenditure. That is what hundreds of country peopla said last week. Political matters are lively enough now to please anybodv. The firm of Otho Wilson, Eaves & Co., is getting in its work. The distinction between republican and third party men has been very slight. It is now even slighter. One of the late developments is the address to the Cumberland county voters, signed by the re publican chairman of that county and by Otho Wilson. The third party manager is mighty solici tous about the matter of registra tion. He publishes in Logo Uai. ris' fusion organ a long letter, signed officially, in which he talks about what he calls past demo cratic frauds, such as ballot box stuffing, &c. Hearing all this talk, by the third party men, observant IeopIe want to know if republican party Chairman Eaves is not in reality the power behind the throiie, making the third party move. Republican money aud re publican advice are said to be freely given the new party, and the bond of onion between them is the determination to beat the democrats at all hazzards. The trnth is the democrats and republicans are both "hacked,'' and they .ire talking to make it appear that they are confident. The third part has made its plan to vote for the republican nominee for associate Justice William S. Ball. The exposure of the "Gideon Band" "business is a severe blow at the third party. It is openly charged that the "band is design ed to control the councils of fiie party. Nearly a year ago some observant people became con-i vinced that there was, ome iwret wheel within a wheel. Not halfi yet revealed. After the election things will bo made public which are not now thoaght or. The third nartv's chief or can doe not attempt to deny the existence, A a a a, a - a r jrcseui,oi iue oanu; it simply tries the old f.i.hioned trick of ridicule. And very weak and noor ridicule it l IW In. stance it says Chairman Simmon ami yonr correspondent are fiid eonitea." There are third party leaders who have worked about in bodily rear all this year. They knew they had violated the law and the constitution, and feared the consequences. It is all a republican chapter in North (irnlin:i nnml li ia n tonising that the woiker have ltd into their ranks of the third parly some good men. The roost abnrd stories are believed, provided one of the party onrans telU them. Kepnblican Chairman Invest, to 1 M. ....... rauy iue negro vote, will throw it "dark cloud' of negro speaker in to the eastern counties, lie re gards this, he tells roe, a quite a stroke of policy. The truth i E:lvr-. i.s ft ulinrrr mn tlinn uim of his enemies would have people believe, lie has per nutted the -non i act ion to say lie bad no money, whereas he has had plen ty. He has permitted the maaie faction to say that lie had made irross mistakes, sold out tl mriv. &c- whereas all this was part of .1. - 1 . . . 1 ue same pian, nameiy, to make the democrats think the republi cans were in a hopelcM quarrel and not in the race at all. No paities have worked together bet ter than the republicans and the third party. The saintly Rives, so weak and lonely, saving noth ing, bnt 'suffering in silence," ba plaved his part well. He is ready to ro to the third nariv nrtn h that party come to him, jost a iue exigencies 01 iuc;cae may de mand. The bad news now cornc thit the couditiou of Chief Justice Merrimou is again bad. Last week he sat up several daj. but now he is in bed aatn. Last night his condition was not at all assuring. .Mr. Ikmhl lLnn.K! iM Treasurer, is in a very critical state. He has great vitality, des pite his frail appearance, to stand as much. So far a can be learned. hote for him is now orartirallv abandoned. There is a remarkable rush tf cotton to the marke;s. The com presses are blocked with it th- railroads have more than they can handle. The rapid opening; and picking (six weeks of perfect weather save one day or ram) and the rnsbinir ot cotton nnon th. markets, have brought about the very neavy receipts. Here, in a brief war. am th estimates of votes given by the iour parties: Democratic esti mate, Io0,b00 for Carr. 13a.ti fr Fnrches, 23,000 for Kxnm. Ke publican estimate, lW.tsm for Furcbes, 110.000 for Carr, jMH.rjwo for Exum. Third partv estimate, Exum 110.000. Carr la".0rt. Vnr ches 90,000. Prohibition estimate. 10,000 votes for the party, without saving what the others will get. The democrat-Is bar thoir !; r trouble as toelecting Congressmen in the fourth and fifth ilirrirt The latter is bv far the most uoubtrul or all. The republicans are spending money freely to carry the th district, but to no purjKse, as the democrats have uv iruui mere, iue re publicans are confident that they will elect Cheatham, the the second district, but the demo crats say they have good protect for Woodard there, and indeed it looks so.
