The latest home papers a yet received War date of December 15, IS!?, and from them I see that the almanacs announced another year in America. We have had no such official announcement, no almanacs having as yet come to hand; but the year came without official sanction, and nearly a month of it is already gone. The Chinese, however, are not so for tunite; they have not yet begun a new year; but it has been an nounced to begin February IT, and as the Chinese have had a b.ibil ot begiuning a year about that time for several thousand years. aud as they are great people lor continuing in the same old ways, there is strong reason to expect, about the time mentioned, a great explosion of tire crackers to an nounce the arrival of the New Year. Last year I had the North Caro lina Baptist Almanac and Dr. Jay nes' Medical Almanac, the latter presented to me by at Chi uese drug store. It need haidly be stated that ou matters of Bap tise doctriue aud Baptist history the said Baptist almanac was a standard anthoiity in our family, list as if we had lived in K.t!eigh : for these thiugs ate not atlectcd by latitude, lint when it came to questions of eclipses, phtws of the moon, rising and setting of the sun, its authority was at a dcridrd discount, aud the medical alni.in.ir, containing calculations fr India instead of America, was much more nearly correct. Aie the astronomers going to allow ns any eclipses thi vearf I have not heard, but I cppe they can scarcely refuse us two or three. But for the sake of illus. tration, we wdl supose that they will allow one to happen. Suppose an eclipse of the sun. lasting two or three hours should le seen by you on Monday afternoon jut lie fore sundown. Now iu all the world where the suu cm In? seen that eclipse will be seen at practi cally the same moment of absolute time. Accordingly, soon alter the eclipsed snn sets for you, it will be Tuesday morniug. Again, supiose the February new moon, which fixe the be ginning or the Chinese new ear, ocenrs in our time a little l-cfore midday on the 17th. At about the same moment your new moon will occur, but you will mark the time as a little belore midnight of the If.ih. These phenomena oecnr. all the world over, at practically the same moment of absolute time; but differences of longitude, a 1 explained in a former article, cause these times to U Y;trioii!y marked. Accordingly calculation made for the longitude of Ualrigh would be nearly twelve hours different from the time of these events in our longitude. Indii is a few degrees west of ns and the edition of the medical almanac made for that country would not be so tar wrong for us. But the risiug aud setting of the sun do not occur at all places at the same absolute time. When the days are 12 hours long, the sun rises at fi and sets at fi. Thi means that it rises fi hours befor? it reaches the meridian of any place, and sets 7 hour after it reaches the meridian. This hap pens two days in the year, called the equinoxes one iu March, the other in September. The sun is then on the equator, and any alma nac is correct the woild over. B it take the time of short dav and long uights. The North Carolina almanac will tell of a day when the sun rises at 7 and sets Mt 5. aud the days are only in hours long. But it happens that tin day which is in hours long in North Carolina is nearly 11 hours long in Canton, and the sun rises at half past six and set at half past 5. Iu summer when yonr days are 1 1 hours long, the suu rises at 5 and sets at 7. But our days are about an hour shorter, and the sun rises at half past 5 and sets at half pat fi. So the North Carolina almanac is correct for us onlv two days in the year. This difference is due to a ilitlrr ence in latitude. The latitude of Baleigh and Ia-noir is aUuit jfi de grees notth. For place ou this parallel the calculations for sunrise aud sunset for Baleigh art correct. But the latitude of Canton ih.ni '2$ degrees north ; we are just be low the Tropic of Cancer, and - nence our long nays are not so long nor our short days so short as in North Carolina. At all places on the Equator the sun al ways rises at fi aud set. at fi, and the days are always equal to the nights. But as you go north or south from the equator the differ- ence beeomes greater ami greater. New York has longer davs in June than in New Orleaus and so there are more sunstrokes in the former city than in the latter. Shanghai around the side of tbe pot: a4 so they make their rol !ralgni over the top of the hill when II would he quite as bear n4 maca easier to go around the hill. Smeilmc the road a r on ad the hill l shorter than that over the top. The cntvatnrr of the earth U somewhat like kill. At the equator the nn tt climb over the tot of the kill every time, and U late till C o'clock to get there. But in the summer, as he goes farther north, he manage to go around on the north side of the hdl, and get in sight of the top llibriten some tine morning in June ly 5 o'clock. But when he goes Mitt In winter, he nint come over the lop ot the hill to the equator, and then ovtf another hill to catch a peep at lMvenort College, s it lake i . .in mm tin . When we clo--ed the Paeifi ocean from San Francisco to Yk ohoni i. I was snrpriel to srv that e did not go directly west alooS the parallel of latitude, but rnl northward, erbp a bote the 5oth degree, and it cptaiel that this course was bearer.
