1 had never been in the compauy
of ttie Xorris although she was
the fiancee of Harry Lee Winston,
my earliest and most intimate
friend. We were both born on
one of the coast islands of Caroli
na and in homes in a rifle shot of
each other, where four generations
t our ancestors had lived. Of
very nearly the same age, we had
lieen confidants and companions
of each other from our earliest re
membrance. We had read the
same hooks, studied at the same
institutions, and would have en-ti-red
college together, but for
the ill health of Harry which
thiew him a year behind me.
Ihiring his last year at college, I
was a graduate and remained at
home giving a general superin
tendance to the family estate and
ilevoting my leisure to reading
niul study. I missed the daily
companionship with Harry very
much indeed; but toward the
close of June he was home on his
summer vacation, aud we were
throwu together daily, as in the
old time.
One warm afternoon in July I
waited over to Oakland for'au
hour's talk with Harry. In front
of the old residence, and covering
a space of about two acres was a
magnificent grove of live oaks, the
smallest of which had stood there
for at least a century. Low head
ed, wide spreading, with trunks of
twelve or fifteen feet in girth,
their huge arms spread out on
every side interlocking together
and overshadowing the whole
are t, so that only here and there
a straggling ray of suulight
pierced through the canopy of
leaves, and tinged with gold the
green velvety turf on which it fell.
We had quit the house and were
seated on rustic seats uuder this
extensive grove, for the coolness
and beauty of the siot. Miles
away, through the summer haze,
we looked out to where, iudistinct
and misty, without any sharply
tlrawu liiitf to dissever them, the
se i and the sky seemed to flow to
gether. Iu the distance, the light
waves lay sportiug in the sunlight,
but nearer at hand thev came
running up upon the beach, and
the sound, as they broke and fell,
came to our ears like the clapping
ot delighted hands in frequent ap
plause. From the "dim religious light'
of the shadowing grove under
which the bieeze swept, we
marked the curlews wheeling iu
their flight and, now aud then, the
white sails of pleasure boats wing
ing their way over the sportive
waves. It was a pleasant spot for
ifri)ds to sit in converse on a
rsiuitajer day.
There was a meditative and
kiaitpy expression on Hairy Win
sCvt's face. Well iniiiht he be
happy. With a splendid island
plantation, and a princely income,
hosts of .friends; youth, and a
handsome person, well might be
numbered aiteiig the happy.

been silent many seconds, uyou
arc something of physiognomist : 1

.And he handed me a small but
uvell taken photograph, enclosed
Tt a crimson-colored case of velvet.
It was the photograph of a face I
had seen before seen at the ball
given by our graduating class but
six mouths before, when the
pleasurable excitement had height
eued whatever of beauty her face
possessed. She was indeed a very
pretty and attractive woman,
charming in the ball-room with
her t ace lighted up with joy, while
the music stirred her pulse with
iits rhythmic melody, and the
ilaneers feet kept time to its
fthrobbings.
With Settle Norris, the original
of the picture, I had never con
trred, but she was the reigning
,t Ur! of the old city where our
Aim'. Mater was located; ami
there nwy f flV tellow

her suii.V. But, at the graduat
ing ball giran by ray class, a re
mark other which came to my
ears did not' tend to exalt her in
my esteem. I was promenading
with a beaut:fu! and intellectual
girl whose couv-ersation, at all
times, had a great attraction for
me.

I knew that JSellie was passion

that she delighted in the world of
fashion and iu having a crowd or
admirers ever around her; and I
feared she was a mere buiiei tly of
the fashionable world, whose life
would drag along wearily
It was about a month arter this
period, that I sat in one of Ihe
lower chambers of Mrs. Winston's,
looking, uear the hour of midnight
out on the restles sea flashing
under the light of the full moon.
Harry Winston lay deterately ill
of a fever. I at bv the open
window looking out uion the I
beautiful uight. The vast mas of
foliage U'lore me lay still, nnd
glistening in the light of the full
moon, for there was not brcrj-r
enough to stir a single leaf. No
sounds from without ame to niT
ear but the lapping of the light
combing waves as they broke and
fell upon the hard, sandv beach.
A lamp on the hearth burned with
a soft, feeble light, behind a
screen, and towards a corner of
the chamber, out of the liht,
Harry Winston lay battling wuu
disease. The only son of his
mother and she a widow, four
days had passed since he was
taken down with fever in its rnt
violent torm. I had hastened to
his side as soon as informed of hi
illness, and there I had remained.
This uight his mother, wearied out
with constant watching, had been
prevailed uoii to retire nnd, with
servants wiinin call. I alone
watched by his side.
During the day his fever hid
risen to a great height nnd bis
mind had wandered contiuually.
His eyes glowed and his lips were
parched with beat. As the night
came on, bis fever began to abate,
and be bad at last fallen into a
disturbed slumber. From tirce to
time I noted his pulse, waiting the
moment when his fever bad n 111
ciently declined to give the pre
scribed medicine with safety.
As the hands of my watch
marked ;he hour of twelve, be
turned in bed with a tdgh and I
knew he was awake. I hastened
to bis side to administer the medi
cine. He stared at me wildly for
some seconds as though astonished
at my preseuce.
