We were deeply pained, when the news came over the wire tell ing of the death of young- Alfred Avery, which took place at Dur ham, where he was a member of Trinity College, in his sopho more j-ear. He was 2 bright, warm-hearted and noble boy, about sixteen year of age, honorable, high minded and conscientious, endeared to all his playmates and companion by his many fine traits of character. We looked upon him a a boy who would grow up to a manhood use ful to his country and benehcent to ail around htm ; and it is sad to realize now that the grave ha covered him up. The sympathies of all our peo ple co out to a family so often called to mourn over their dead, whose lives not only brightened the home in which thev moved, but which were so'full of promise for the future. It is to u inex pressibly sad. May the hearts that have been 50 severely tried find that comfort in the convda- tions of the gospel which belong to the believer ; "As a mother comforteth her sn so will com fort iv." May this promise be fulfilled to our sorrowing friend in their sore bereavement. fta;-tjf ft4al pV.4 jgv4.. ' J-! $?j ! vvi. . tvr! On last Tuesday, while Mr. Conley was in Morganton, attenaing court, Mrs. Conley discovered a rattle-snake in her yard, coming in the direction of the house. Mrs. Conley, as quick as a flash, secured a hoe, and with wonderful nerve, rushed out into the yard meeting the snake and gave it a blow with the hoe which caused it to turn and start in an opposite direction. She dealt it a second blow, which killed it. The snake measured three feet ten inches in length and had ten rattles and a button. It is a rare thing for a rattle-snake to be found so far down from the mountains; and Mrs. Conley de serves the praise of the communi ty for the way in which she re ceived this one. The lead has been traced across the mountain int i Caldwell, aid a valuable out cropping discovered on the land of the Caldwell Lumber Company. There is a fine bed of Kaolin in South Carolina ; but, so far a we are aware, no ceramic industry has been established in the neigh borhood. The Kaolin ha been shipped North and worked up there.
