K : ::v true friend of education in North Carolina must note with t ieasure how President Winston is t ringing the University of North Car oiina to the front. There are now 360 students enrolled at Chapel Hill, and it is probable that the total enrollment for the year v .i reach 400. In the list of new i".;: dents we note the names of o.n- men from Texas, South C .r jlina. Tennessee, Washington, I. C, Virginia, Minnesota and other states. Every patriotic N rr'i Carolinian must welcome the day when his State will be cme as preeminent in her educa t. jnal system as she now is in resources. says Newton has been chosen as the head- quarters for the Kastcrn trial which have been held heretofore at High Point. Week before last the Shelby Everybody must admire the t d d stand taken by Senator Mills, ' Texas, in his speech in favor of the repeal of the purchasing clause r-f the Sherman act. He said he 1 vote for repeal and he ' 1 vote against every amend. merriment to the bill that human ingenuity could suggest. He - conceive of no amendment t;;at could be offered that would nut impeach the integrity of the President, and he would vote against every one." He was right. 1 he people can afford to trust r ver Cleveland. lie as never y . - back on the people yet. North Carolina is all Kiglit. Trie report that North Carolina was oing to the devil, ain't so. is not headed in that direction. It might be remarked, in pess in, that whenever North Carolina aT'ts vj the devil, the rest of the country will be in shouting dis tance. This grand old commonwealth, famous for her mountains and low land famous for her brave men and beautiful women, God bless em nas nassed throusrh the ;:iic" with a nroiid rprrrrl and Aurora made a vicious attack on Hon. W. H. Bower, member of Congress from this district. It seems that an Alliance in Caldwell county wrote to Mr. Bower asking for his views upon the silver question. Mr. Bower answered, as he had a perfect right to do, and the editor of the Amrtra made this the occasion and the excuse for his attack upon him When Senator Vance replied t. the letter of the Mecklenburg Alli ance the editor of the Aurora com mended him for it and endorsed his views, at least that is about what one would conclude he did who would have the patience to try to penetrate the veil of dodges and inconsistences with which the Aurora's editor usually adorns hi editorial utterances. Mr. Bower did exactly what Senator Vance did and expressed the same views, still, the editor of the Aurora pitches into Mr. Bower and accuses him of "trying to ride two horses at once," an "acrobatic feat" which some folks say the editor of the Aurora desires to monopolize, at least it is common talk that the editor of the Amrora has jumped from one side to the other on every important question and if the two horses he was try ing to ride at one and the same time got too far apart, he would jump down between, climb up on the fence watch the race and try to ride the winner. The views expressed by Mr. Bower were the views to which he gave utterance before his nomina tion and throughout the campa;gn. This writer does not endorse those views altogether and interpret the Democratic platform some what differently from Mr Bower, yet we recognize the fact that Mr. Bower has a right to his views and 10 their expression. 1 he secret of the Aurora's attack on Mr. Bower is to be found in the fact that Mr. Bower did not en dorse the editor of the Attrvra for otitmmni i hirf ti ntnaannl aid: "ltlrelafnl tUt Im(o ernment nn rl i: to him Ur t Ung wrtvie at alow naUry.
