The Toftc savs that the Back - of Lenoir will be opened for busi ness about December 4th. Thanksgiving services will be held at Y. M. C. A. hall, Thursday at 1 1 a. m. An offering will be tak en up for the Thompson Orphan age at Charlotte, N. C. Madam Rumor says that be fore many moons, in one of our sister towns, a marriage will take place in which a popular young man from Morganton will be one of the principals. Col. T. G. Walton has kindly consented to furnish The Herald with a series of articles on old times in Burke county, which we know will be read with great in terest by our readers. The first installment will appear next week. On last Thursday morning the St. Stephen's Church was dedi cated by the Rt. Rev. J. B. Ches hire. Assistant Bishop of the N. C. Dioceses, assisted by Revs. Mc Neely Dubois, William Walker, E. P. Green, H. McDuffey and James Kennedy. There was a musical enter tainment given under the manage ment of the Lancaster Mission Band at Cap. G. P. Erwin's, Tues day evening. The entertainment was for the benefit of the Pres byterian Orphanage at Barium Springs. Apples and potatoes con stituted th2 admission fees, and yesterday four barrels of fine pota toes and apples were shipped from Morganton to the Orphanage. At the same meeting the children made contributions to the Congo Boat Fund, tor which object $36 was raised. The State Hospital has broken the record on raising potatoes. From a field containing 6 acres they harvested this year 2,2 12 bush els of very tfine sweet potatoes, or more than 36S bushels to the acre; besides this, they raised on a few small patches, 1,224 bushels of Irish potatoes. The potatoes have been packed in ventilated barrels and stored in the cellars, and Mr. Walton, superintendent of the Hos pital farm, tells us they are keep ing perfectly. The experiments with celery on the Hospital farm have been very successful, and the institution has enough of the tooth some herb to supply the home mar ket of a quality as fine as that im ported from the North. Mr. F. R. Tiiley and bride spent a few days last week with Mr. J. S. Tilley, of Smoky Creek township, father of the groom. They returned to Morgantan Sat urday evening, leaving their trunk 1 at the groom's father's to be sent to them here on Tuesday, the day they were to leave for Hopkins vi le, Ky. It began sleeting on Monday morning, and the groom's father, thinking that perhaps the weather of Tuesday would be worse, started his son John with the trunk in a two-horse wagon. On reaching the Rocky Ford bridge on the Catawba river, a mile and a half north of Morgan ton, John found the bridge covered with a sheet of ice, and in attempt ing to cross, one of the horses slipped and fell-off the bridge and into the river, dragging the other horse and the wagon with him. J jhn, realizing his perilous situa tion as the wagon started off the bridge, leaped out into the river far enough away to keep the wagon from falling on him, and got out without injury beyond a very cold bath. The trunk washed out of the wagon and on down the river. Mr. Lowdermilk. who lives near the bridge and who heard the noise caus ed by the falling of the horses and wagon, got to the scene in time to rescue the horses by cut ting the harness and thus freeing them frjm the wagon. Mr. Low dermilk also jumped into the river and followed the trunk and recov ered it. The horses and wagon were all gotten out without being seriously injured by the accident. The trunk contained about $250 worth of clothing, which was more or less injured by the water. rTDr. W. H. Wakefield, of Winston, will be at the hotel in Moiganton all day Wednesday, December 13. Miss Kate Pearsall, Miss Ivy Hayes, Miss Juiia Tull, and Mr. Julian Ingle, Mr. J. W. Wilson, r Mr. Frank Tate and Dr. I. P. Jeter. IWth f William fcrwia KM. The tenderest sympathy of our community eoes out to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Reid in the deat of their beautiful little boy William Erwin. For more than a wee loving hearts hoped for a brighter dawn ; and, though disappoint ment darkened hope, 'twas a gold en davn to little Erwin as the angel escort carried his pure, while soul to the God who gave it. A picture of boyish health, a budding flower; yet there are shrivelled shrubs in every garden, little graves in every churchyard. It is a comforting thought, that our little ones, when called to Heaven, go on errands of mercy. They carry the sweet chain of love, fastened to the home altar, twine it round the eternal throne, and by its invisible chords draw us nigh unto Him, who is the only Com forter. The funeral services at the house were conducted by the Kev. E. P Green. The interment services at the cemetery were conducted by the Rt. Rev. J. B. Cheshire, assisted by the Rev. John M. Rose. Little Erwin was three years old the 1 2th of September, 1893, and died October 23d.
