ANSWER: You are evidently us ing seed from the crop which you grew last year and this should not be done, says Dr. Emerson Collins, in charge of Extension agronomy at State College. New hybrid seed must be bought each year. The hybrid corn is produced by a series of crosses with definite parents. When the seed are planted a second year, they break down Into all kinds of combinations and yields are not satisfactory. QUESTION: What should I do to keep green moss from growing in my yard? ANSWER: The presence of moss in your yard indicates an acid soil, a poor soil, or both conditions, says John H. Harris, horticultural exten sion specialist. He suggests that you send a sample of your soil to the Soils Department, N. C. State De partment of Agriculture. Raleigh, for an analysis and recommenda tions as to liming and fertilization. Your county agent will be glad to give you directions for taking the soil sample and mailing it. QUESTION: How can I get rid of Bermuda grass? ANSWER: This grass, often call ed joint or wire gTass, cannot tol erate continuous shade and it can : therefore, be controlled by planting close growing crops for two years, says Roy Lovvorn. in charge of for age crops for the Agricultural Ex periment Station. Cowpeas, crotal-: aria ,or velvet beans can be grown j during the summer and a mixture j of small grain and vetch during the winter. If the land is turned rough in the fall, many roots will freeze j during the winter. That large Scuppemong grape | vine that has no grapes is probably ] a male vine, and will never bear. Few Changes In Point Values t Occur In July i Raleigh, July 4.—Very few point 1 changes are announced by OPA for the month of July, with processed ' foods, beef, lamb and veal all re . maining stable, according to the district office in Raleigh. Pork re mains practically unchanged, the 1 only changes being minor increas es for certain fat cuts. Margarine, because of its shorter supply, is upped two points, making 1 it 14 points per pound; butter re mains unchanged at 24 points per pound for creamery butter 12 points for country or process butter. The points for canned fish are higher in July because of reduced supply for civilians. Canned tuna and salmon are now 9 points per pound; oysters, 4 points. Cheeses take a decided drop, ac cording to the new point chart, with 2 to 4 point decreases in all classes of rationed cheese. This reduction is chiefly because of the highly sea sonal nature of the products, OPA explained. Lard, shortening, and salad and j cooking oils retain the 12-point ' value which Went into effect June 1 17th, OPA said. 1 o Rationing Al I A Glance Ration Calendar To July 14 ! THE COl)l;IEB-TIMES Clearing Up The Streams By J. R. Adair. Soil Conservationist s Selective Service must be applied to farming in Person county to mpst effectively use the crop producing powers of our soils according to J. VV. Wilburn, agriculture teacher. “We have heard much about Se lective Service for the Armed Forces, said Mr. Wilburn, in which men and women because of their health, physical condition and capabilities were selected to train and fight for our country. Then too, we are also aware of the fact that certain in dustrial and manufacturing plants because of their physical type of machinery and capabilities were se lected to produce certain wartime materials in supplying the war de mands. We also know that to be se lected for training and to fight ov- I erseas or to produce or manufacture j wartime materials for oversea use j it is an honor and a privilege as a j citizen to be of service to his court- ] try."
