ADAIR, Soil Conservationist This is the first of a series of arti cles written by farmers who are do- i ing an excellent job in conservation 1 farming. Mr. L. L. Long, a conserva- j tion farmer that the Person County j soil conservation work unit has been j working with since the fall of 1939,] was asked by the writer of this j weekly column to write this one for ’ him this week and to say anything; that he wished. So here goes the first article writ ten by conservation farmers. Mr. Long is well known throughout the ] county; He owns 109 acres about j 7 miles North West of Roxboro oil Route No. 1. His farm perhaps ’s more especifically known to memb ers of Civic Clubs and others as the place where you get delicious barbe cue chicken in the shade of the trees around his tobacco barns. Lewis Long’s Own Statement “Since I have been a member of j Dan River Soil Conservation I have; learned a great deal of how to take ! care of a farm by building terraces; aiftl sowing meadow strips. Sow it early in the fall with herd grass, orchard grass and red ton clover so that it can get a good start to stand the winter. By doing this, the next Spring you can mow that for feed. The first year you can get two crops nice hay and the second year you can get three crops of hay. By keeping it limed and properly fertilized this land will get richer every year. “Build your terraces on the hill side so that they can drain into the meadow strip. That will take care of ail surplus dirt instead of going down the gulleys and branches like the old-fashioned way. We have a farm on which six years ago there was plenty of sand td be hauled to town and other places by the car loads. Today there are grass mix tures growing on these places and you can’t tell there are any sand bars at all, this due to terracing and building meadow .strips." -———-o —■—- The cornerstone of the Washing ton monument was laid July 4, 18-tS, but the shaft was not completed until 1885. Hayes, JenJiervW &yg: M % Some arguments for Increased pay for workers arc pretty good, but there is no sense whatever in the argument that because some body made certain wages during the war he should continue to make them now. War wages were paid with bor rowed money. The government went almost 300 billion dollars in debt' to pay war wages. It will take us 50 to 100 years to pay oft this debt. The motto then was “Pay any body any price in order to shorten the war and 'are lives.” The war was a spending spree. But you can’t go 50 years in debt every year in order to have varliine prosperity every year. By Bob Green with C. E. Newman as joint hostess. “Old winter is a sturdy one, and lasting stuff he's made of. His lles'n is firm as ironstone, There’s noth ing he's afraid of.” The above is quite fitting to the ] winter we are now experiencing. Very soon January will make its exit and we hope that With it goes its icy trip' and the proverbial ground hog will make favorable predictions with its early appearance.
