WALKER, Secretary THE COURIER-TIMES Dynamite Best Ditch Digger Dynamite is the big noise in farm i ;drainage as North Carolina’s rural land owners seek in increasing num bers to save potential cropland from the ravages of unseasonable weath j er, according to Howard Ellis, State College Extension Service engineer. Ellis, who has reported two suc cessful demonstrations of ditch dynamiting in Duplin Onslow coun ties, says that the type of explosive being used by most farmers now is j j about 50 percent nitro-glyccrln and 1 I advised that blasting machines rath er than the cld cap and fuse method should be used in setting off the ; charges. On the Thigpen faim near Beaula ville, County Agent L. F. Weeks of j Kenansville. demonstrated the ad j vantages of dynamite by blasting a drainage ditch two and a half feet j deep, six feet wide and 240 feet long. | I A test charge of 22 pounds of ex-; | plosive was first used to determine j | how the main charges should be 1 ! placed in order to get the desired i ditch pattern. The cost of this ditch jing was about $25 and time required |to finish it was about an hour. It 'was estimated conservatively tlinl 'the cost of the same ditch, hand er.;. would have been SIOO or more: If labor had been available. Side : pesos the dynamited ditch as me an angle of about 45 degrees . .'Oil bank material is thrown ,era wide area, rather than piled .. imaind.on the ditch bank. Tire cost of a similar ditch—four 5 r deoD. eight feet wide and 450 ;e. i long—on the farm of Clyde Morton. Ri 3. Jacksonville, was ! about S6O using dynamite. It could I not have been dug by hand for less I than $l5O. according to Onslow I County Agent C. C. Clark. Jr. March 31 to April 7, 1946, is Na tional Negro Health Week.
