I like to recall serene moments spent walking through the woods, and plan out future trips in my head. Looking through the latest Backpacker maga zine this weekend made me even more anxious to spend a long weekend on a trail somewhere, preferably in the mountains. I also saw an ad reminding hikers that Saturday is National Trails Day (NTD) Mountains to Sea Trail. I can imagine that keeping a trail properly maintained is hard work. I wonder what kind of commitment and how many people it takes to manage our country’s longer footpaths, like the approximately 2,000 mile long Appalachian Trail, part of which runs through North Carolina; the 3,000-mile Continental Divide Trail that runs from Mexico to Canada, or the 2,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail that also goes from Mexico to Canada? I think it’s a neat concept to designate a day each year during which people all over the country are encouraged to celebrate, and/or “give something back” to, the trails that so many use and enjoy. There are numerous events planned for Saturday that include trail maintenance and building projects. Nearby examples include a trail improvement workday Saturday at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary, sponsored by the REI store in Cary At Durham’s Eno River State Park volunteers are being sought for construction and maintenance projects on the North Carolina It’s hard for me to imagine what the world or outdoor recreation would be like without trails to explore. It would certainly be a lot more difficult to spend time traveling through the woods if we had to bushwhack every time. So whether or not I’m able to get out on a trail Saturday or not. I’m sure I’ll be thinking about one or another, and appreciating the ways they’ve enriched my life. Editor’s note: Sooooo, now you’re admitting to daydreaming on the job?
