assume ownership; current PMH
employees are guaranteed a job

Person Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman Robby Jones announced Friday
morning that Duke Lifepoint Healthcare had signed a memorandum of understanding to
purchase PMH, which was dedicated at its Ridge Road location in September of 1950.
“This is a great day for health
care in Person County It is an
awesome day.”
Those words were spoken by
Person Memorial Hospital Board
of Trustees Chairman Robby
Jones Friday after the hospital
signed a memorandum of under
standing for acquisition by Duke
Lifepoint Healthcare.
Jones had just returned from
a morning spent announcing the
news to hospital employees. He
said all employees of Person Me
morial would be guaranteed a j oh
under the terms of the acquisi
tion, and may get better benefits
than those they now have.
He said the hospital board
had worked for the past sev
eral months “to develop a stra
tegic plan that will effectively
strengthen our hospital for the
future. As we explored our op
tions to secure the future of the
hospital to continue to serve
the people of Person County,”
Jones continued, “it became
clear that an affiliation would be
critical to the future” of Person
Memorial.
Jones went on to say that,
as the board looked at partner
ing options, “Duke Lifepoint
emerged as a great fit for our

2 arrested in shootings that injured 4 this week
Roxboro police: Investigation into both incidents continuing and more arrests are likely

Roxboro police arrested two men
Wednesday in connection with a pair of
shooting incidents that occurred in the
past week within the city.
Four people suffered gunshot wounds
in the two separate incidents.
Brentley Derrick Yancey, 23, of Fay
etteville and Vernon Antwan Elliott
Bailey 21, of 74 Dylan St. were each
arrested on multiple charges and jailed
under secured bonds of $500,000.
Both were charged with at least one
felony count each of attempted first-
degree murder, assault with a deadly
weapon with intent to kill inflicting seri
ous inj ury and discharging a weapon into
an occupied dwelling or vehicle. The two
were also charged with misdemeanor
counts of going armed to the terror of
the public.
Yancey is a former Roxboro resident.
He is currently in the U.S. Army and
stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville.
He was arrested Wednesday in Fayette
ville and transported back to the Person
County Law Enforcement Center.

The Monday shooting incident oc
curred at 1721 Sunset Drive in Ca-Vel
Village shortly after 10 p.m.
At that location, shots were reportedly
fired into a crowd of people attending a
cookout, as well as homes and vehicles.
Two persons suffered gunshot wounds
at that location, including one man who
was shot in the neck.

in connection with a shooting that took
place in the early morning hours last

He may be in a Duke University
Medical Center hospital room, but that
hasn’t stopped state Rep. W A. (Winkie)
Wilkins, D-Person, from keeping an

Wilkins, who has been at Duke with a
ruptured appendix since Monday night,
said he’d been in constant touch with
his assistant and other members of the
House of Representatives this week.
He was prepared, and his doctors had
agreed to allow him, to go to Raleigh to
vote on the state budget if needed.
“We talked one time about the possi
bility of wheeling me into the chamber
to vote,” he said in a Friday telephone
conversation from his hospital room.
“But,” Wilkins continued, “in the end
of pain” when he arrived at the Duke
emergency department Monday night.
After several days of “huge doses of
antibiotics,” he said Friday that he felt

review proposed CTE plan
at Thursday meeting

$130,000 worth of
marijuana Tuesday

Law enforcement authorities seized
multiple marijuana plants in Person
County this week with a street value
reportedly in excess of $130,000.
The Person County Sheriff’s Office,
working in a joint effort with the North
Carolina Highway Patrol, the National
Guard and the North Carolina State
Bureau of Investigation, seized 54 plants
from 11 different plots during the opera
tion on Tuesday
Highway Patrol and National Guard
helicopters were used as part of the
operation.
Sheriff’s deputies said the marijuana
was seized from plots that were located
in Hurdle Mills and Moriah. Each plant,
deputies said, has a street value of ap
proximately $2,500.
Deputies also said that at one location
where marijuana plants were seized two
booby traps had been set.
No arrests had been made as of Fri
day in connection with the marijuana
seizure.
Deputies said, however, the investiga
tion was continuing and arrests were
likely in the near future.

cation will hold its next meeting on
Thursday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the board
of education board room, located on
the ground floor of the Person County
Office Building at 304 S. Morgan St. in
Roxboro.
Nutrition Director Lyn Holt will
present the 2011-12 nutrition budget
proposal, as well as award next year’s
nutrition bids to selected vendors.
The board will also decide on a meet
ing time for the June 30 board meeting,
and the schedule for the 2011-12 board
meetings.
In other business, an update on
the Career and Technical Education
(CTE) Program Review and the 2011-
12 local CTE plan and budget will be
presented.
A program review taskforce was
organized earlier in the year and held
its last meeting on May 11.
The taskforce was comprised of mem
bers of the community, educators and
business/industry representatives, and
led by Robert White, retired director of
CTE with Guilford County Schools.
