Gamecocks bringing new meaning to 'America's pasttime'
When I was a youngster, I played some softball but was never
very good at it. I had problems doing anything that required hit
ting a round object with any kind of stick. Golf, pool, you name
it, if 1 had to whack something with
something else, 1 just couldn’t make
connection.
Despite my challenges, 1 liked
to watch softball and baseball,
though, and often went to local
church and rec league games to
watch friends.
Later on, I watched a major
Phyliss Boatwright
!
the whiney millionaires whining for more money, and stopped
watching baseball all together.
But, over the past couple of years, my University of South
Carolina Gamecocks have done
me so proud I’ve had to return
to “America’s pastime.” Only on
the college side, though. Still not
gonna support the whiney mil
lionaires.
Anyway, I’ve been keeping up
with the College World Series
this year as the Gamecocks have
league game now and then and pulled for the Braves.
When I lived in Pennsylvania during the early 1980s, I shared an
apartment with a woman from St. Louis who was a rabid Cardinals
fan. I couldn’t help getting into the sport because of Linda, but
still didn’t consider myself a die-hard baseball person.
Then my grandnephew Ryan got really interested in the game,
playing as a standout in high school. My interest grew because
of Ryan’s interest.
He even had a scholarship to play in college, but suffered a se
vere back injury in a car accident and doctors told him he would
not be able to keep up with the rigorous schedule.
I still watched a game now and then, though, and continued
pulling for the Braves.
And, like my father, I always watched “The See-ries.” Daddy
never watched regular season games, but always had to watch
the World Series.
I continued following in his footsteps until the big baseball
strike took place in the mid-1990s, and then I got really sick of
marched forward.
I watched the first game of the College World Series finals
Monday night and had such a great time. I’d forgotten how much
fun a good baseball game could be.
Granted, Monday night’s game was boring in spots — until the
ninth inning. But then things started cooking, and the Gamecocks
ended up beating the Florida Gators 2-1 in 11 innings.
Those last three innings brought back some good memories
of other good games, and of course made me really proud of my
home state and our flagship university.
I’m writing this column on Tuesday ^ter noon, so by the time it’s
read, the Gamecocks will either have earned their second consecu
tive national title, or will have another game to go in Omaha.
On Tuesday night, I have to cover the annual Person County
Extension Service banquet and you can bet I’m going to be mo
tioning for Derek Day to keep things rolling so I can get home as
close to 8 p.m. as possible.
For now. I’ll just say, “Gooooooooo Gamecocks!”
Highway Patrol encourages motorists to slow down
The N.C. Highway Patrol is
encouraging motorists to be
careful as they enjoy the Fourth
of July holiday.
Motorists who slow down and
travel at posted speeds will not
only increase their chances of ar
riving at their destination safely.
they will also conserve fuel.
There will be an increased
presence of troopers on the
interstates and major four lane
highways.
Speed is the leading cause of
traffic collisions and fatalities in
the state. Troopers will be crack
ing down on speeders during the
holiday and will be using LIDAR
and other speed timing devices
to assist them in enforcing the
speed laws.
Troopers will increase patrols
on all interstates and major four
lane highways during the holiday
