Napier, Wrenn sign with Patriots

Over the past few years, Patrick
Henry Community College out of
Martinsville, Va. has become a
destination point for Person High
School baseball players.
Recent Person standouts, such
as Cody Ellis, Trey Davis and Ste
phen Wright, have been recruited
by the Patriots, who compete in
the National Junior College Ath
letic Association’s Region X.
Two more Rockets — 2011
graduates Brandon Napier and
Kyle Wrenn — signed letters of
intentlastFridaytoplayforPHCC
next spring.
Both players made the all-
Piedmont Athletic Conference
team as seniors this season and
helped the Rockets to a 16-7 overall
record, an 8-4 fourth-place finish
in the PAC-6, and a Division 4A
playoff berth.
Napier, along with being Per
son’s number-two pitcher behind
ace Dylan Dickens, batted .342
with four home runs and 26 RBI
and made the all-conference team
as a second baseman.
Wrenn was a solid outfielder
and contributed offensively as
wen by hitting .388 on the cam
paign.
“Person and Roxboro have been
very good to our program and
we’re excited to keep the tradition
going,” said PHCC head coach
Paul Menschner. “I think both of
these guys will have a shot to play
a whole lot right away”
Napier and Wrenn will join a
Patriot team that finished 32-14
overall and 13-10 in Region X play
in 2011.
“I’m looking forward to the
challenge and having a chance to
continue to improve my game,”
said Napier. “Hopefully the time
I play [at PHCC] will help me get
better so I can [eventually] play
at a four-year school.”
Wrenn’s motivations are pretty
much the same.
“I’m just excited to have a
chance to play somewhere next
year. I’m looking forward to it,”
Baseball
he said.
“It’s always good to see guys
from our program extend their
careers in college. Brandon and
Kyle have really earned it and
they deserve it,” added Person
head coach John Koket, who is
coaching the Roxboro Senior Le
gion team, of which both Napier
and Wrenn are members, this
summer. “They’ve worked hard
and improved in all facets of the
game in their time at Person. We
wish them the best.”
Rocket players who have gone
on to Patrick Henry have certainly
thrived. EUis batted .379 with 36
RBI this season for the Patriots
and was a second-team all-region
outfielder.
As well, Davis and Wright have
been key contributors, and Davis
is currently playing as a catcher
for the Martinsville Mustangs
of the Coastal Plains Collegiate
League.

Person High School graduated senior players Brandon Napier and Kyle Wrenn (front) signed
a letter of intent to play junior college baseball at Patrick Henry Community College last
Friday. Present for the signings were family members and coaches (L-R): Middle — Cody
Napier, Lisa Napier, Kathy Wrenn and Mel Wrenn. Back — William Napier, Nicole Napier,
Patrick Henry head coach Paul Menschner, and Person head coach john Koket.
“We know the Person coaching
staff does a good job of teaching
the game and preparing players
for the college level,” said Men
schner. “Cody and Trey have been
huge players for us and they’ll
be back next year and we’re
looking for them to be our main
leaders.”
