John Michael Hanna
John Michael Hanna, age 80, of
1616 Maurice Daniels Road died
Friday evening, June 24, 2011 at
Person Memorial Hospital. He
was born in Guilford County to
the late Michael and
Miriam Hanna. He was
* a captain having served
r ' in the U.S. Army. He
graduated from Elon
College and N.C. School of Pub
lic Health. He was a member of
the Roxboro Eastern Star #207
where he served as treasurer
and he was also a member of the
Eastern Star of Maryland; the
Corinthian Lodge #093AF&AM of
Md; Scottish Rite of Free Masonry
of Baltimore, Md.; and Boumi
Shrine of Baltimore; he was also
a member of the Person County
Historical Society. He was owner
and operator of Hanna Oriental
Rugs in Baltimore. Mr. Hanna was
of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta
Winstead Hanna of the home,
and two sisters, Yvonne Todaro
and Elizabeth Michaels, both of
Baltimore.
The funeral service was held
at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011
at Concord United Methodist
Church. Officiating was the Rev.
Karl Neuschaefer and the Rev.
Thomas G. Holtsclaw. Burial
was in the church cemetery with
Masonic rites.
Pallbearers were Michael
Teague, Donald Teague, Travis
Winstead, Butch Setter ington and
David Daniel.
Memorials may be made to a
charity of one’s choice.

Johnnie Alton Holt, age 54 of
64 Solomon Court Apt. #4, died
Friday morning at his home.
^ Born in Person County
he was son of Henry
1 “Fats” Edward Holt and
Verdice Day Lynch. Mr.
Holt was a veteran of the
U.S. Army and was a member of
Somerset Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his
parents are one brother Andrew
Holt, and two sisters, Betty Holt
and Lynn H. Carter, all of Rox
boro.
The family received friends
Sunday evening from 6:30 until 8
p.m. at Brooks & White Funeral
Home and at other times at the
Home of Michael and Tammy Day,
486 Snatchburg Road, Milton.
Memorial services were held at
2 p.m. Monday at Somerset Baptist
Church by the Rev. Troy Rust.
Honorary pallbearers were
Michael Day Sr., Butch Day, Scott
Day, James Day, Michael Day Jr.
and Duane Reaves.

Curtis Eugene Long, 89 of
Winston-Salem passed away on
Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Wake
Forest Baptist Health Palliative
Care Unit. He was born in Rox
boro on Dec. 2, 1921, the son of
Arthur MarceUus Long and Nettie
Perkins Long.
He served in U.S. Army Air
Corps (US Air Force) from 1943 to
1947. In 1947 he attended the Art
Institute of Pittsburgh.
In 1949 he returned to North
Carolina to work for an
^^11^ 5 outdooradvertisingfirm
and on July 1 of that year
r ^ he started his own ad
vertising business, Long
Ad Art Service. The next year he
was joined by Joseph Haymes and
in 1954 it became Long-Haymes
Advertising. Austin Carr joined
the agency in 1954 and in the early
1960s the agency became Long
Haymes and Carr Advertising,
Inc.; one of the largest advertis
ing agencies in the Southeast.
He retired from Long Haymes &
Carr in 1987.
He was a member of the Strat
ford Rotary Club, Forsyth Country
Club, Q^uail Ridge Golf & Country
Club, in Boynton Beach, Fla., High
Meadows Country Club and Olde
Beau Golf Club.
He served as chairman of
the Winston-Salem Convention
Center/Coliseum Commission
and of the Forsyth County Pub
lic Solicitation Committee. He
also served as a president of the
Winston-Salem Chamber of Com
merce and Winston-Salem Resto
ration Executive Committee. He
was trustee of North Carolina
Baptist Hospital and Trustee of
Old Salem, Inc.
He is a member of the Hall of
Fame at the Art Institute of Pitts
burgh and a recipient of the Silver
Medal Award with the American
Advertising Federation.
He was a continuous supporter
of Old Salem, Senior Services and
the Winston-Salem Foundation.
He is preceded in death by his
parents, his brother Dolian Long,
and sisters Lucille Oliver and
Christine Dark.
He is survived by his wife of
60 years, Sara Ruth Smith, who
he married on Aug. 19,1951. Sis
ters, who also survive him are
Evelyn Drake of Thomasville,
Elsie Hearn of Winston-Salem,
Marion Overcash of Raleigh,
Shirley Williford of Roxboro,
many nieces and nephews, his
goddaughter, Linda Lewallen
Watts and his dedicated assistant
Wanda Carleton.
A memorial service was held
at 11 a.m. on Tuesday June 28,
at Knollwood Baptist Church.
Guests were invited to a light
lunch to greet the family immedi
ately following the service in the
fellowship hall of the church.

Otis “LoBo” Haley Stephens,
age 85, of 374 Providence Road
died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his
home.
He was born in Person County
to the late John Ira and Nettie Mae
Hamlett Stephens.
Preceding him in death were
his wife. Ruby Solomon Stephens,
four sisters, Mary Mosley Pansy
Wilborn, Reable Painter and
Violee Saunders and one brother,
Tony Stephens.
He was a World War
Wg ; II Army veteran. Mr.
Stephens was retired
as plant manager of
Tultex Mills and was a
professional baseball player for
the Philadelphia Phillies. He was
of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his son, A1 and
his wife Wanda Stephens; his
daughter, Sandra Stephens Thom
as; his brother Joe Stephens; two
sisters, Shirley S. Gentry and
Thelma S. White, all of Roxboro;
two grandchildren, Haley Ste
phens Scearce and husband Chris,
and Kelly Thomas Griffin and
husband Chris; and four great
grandchildren, Nicholas Scearce,
Nathan Scearce, Jaden Griffin and
Jordan Griffin.
The family received friends
from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, June
27 at the Brooks & White Funeral
Home and at other times at the
home.
The funeral service was held
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at Lon-
ghurst United Methodist Church
by the Rev. Herbert Lowery. Inter
ment was in the Person Memorial
Cemetery.

try, Bill Dunkley Floyd Bowes,
Dale Gentry, Luther Snead, Berk
ley Morris and Sonny Mangum.

For the seventh consecutive
week, the average retail price
for a gallon of regular unleaded
gasoline fell statewide, accord
ing to information released
Monday by NorthCarolina-
GasPrices.com.
In the past week, the average
retail price for a gallon of gas
in North Carolina reportedly
fell 5.7 cents, averaging $3.49
Monday.
The most recent decrease
came on the heels of a 4.0
decline the previous week and
drops of 3.7 cents, 3.3 cents, 5.1
cents, 8.6 cents and 0.7 cents in
the five weeks prior to that.
This past week’s decrease
compares with the national
average that has fallen 6.5 cents
per gallon in the past week to
$3.58 per gallon.
Including the change in gas
prices in North Carolina in the
past week, prices Monday were
88.5 cents per gallon higher than
the same day one year ago and
are 19.7 cents per gallon lower
than one month ago.
The national average has de
creased 21 cents per gallon dur
ing the last month and stands
84 cents per gallon higher than
this day one year ago.
