I use the flea and tick pre ventative on my dogs. Well, actually, since the generic equivalent came out, I’ve been buying that at Walmart for half the price I’d been paying for the name brand stuff Anyway, Frontline (and now Pet Armor) work wonders at keeping the nasty little blood suckers off my animals. But so far this summer, I’ve had four tick bites, despite us ing Off every time I step out side for more than five seconds, and am getting pretty tired of itching. I’ve got a major red welt be hind my right knee right now, as I type this column, and it’s driving me nuts, even though I put the Community Pharmacy anti-itchy summer gel on before I left the house this morning. That stuff works great on bug bites of all types, by the way My dose from this morning has worn off now, though, at nearly 3 p.m. I can’t remember the correct name for it right now, but if you’ve got itchy bug bites, you should drop in at Community and get some. (I may end up running up the street before the day’s over). BOAT WRITES PHYLISS BOATWRIGHT Most summers, I get one or two ticks. Last summer, I found one on the inside of my arm a day or two after I’d sprayed the dog pen. The bite looked like nothing I’d seen before. You would have thought my whole arm was going to burst into flames, it was so red and swol len. I decided maybe the tick that bit me had gotten into the pes ticide, causing the bite to be worse. I ended up going to Roxboro MedAccess for some antibiot ics and prescription anti-itchy stuff I did a story about tick- borne diseases a few years ago and I ain’t real crazy about the idea of coming down with Lyme Disease or Rocky Moun tain Spotted Fever. This year, it seems like I get a tick every week. And each bite itches for weeks. The one I got on my back three weeks ago still flares up from time to time. The two works by Chappell, previously unpub lished are Passerby and Pres ence. Now this knee-bite is wicked. It amazes me how something so small can cause so much dis comfort. While dealing with yet an other itchy tick bite, I thought it might be a good idea to remind folks to be careful. If you get a tick bite, watch for the follow ing symptoms and visit the doc if you think you need to. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Watch for the symptoms of tick-borne diseases in the weeks following a tick bite — muscle or joint aches, stiff neck, headache, weakness, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and other flu-like symp toms. Watch for a red spot or rash starting at the location of the bite.” Of course, hypochondriac that I am, now that I’ve looked up the symptoms, I feel a bit achy, and, is that a headache I feel coming on? Does anybody have a thermometer handy?
