G. 3,2011 OBITUARIES THE COURIER-TIMES IROXBORO, NC All Willis Cleave Briggs, Sr. James Raymond Nelson Thomas Frank Harris Sr. Bennett Edward Downey Steve Pergerson H| BURLINGTON - Mr. Willis Cleave ‘Moondoog’ Briggs, Sr, 57, of 725 Elmira Street, Burling ton died at the Hospice Home on Sunday, July 31,2011 at 9:30 p.m. Born and raised in Person County, he was the husband of Amanda Duggins Briggs, who survives and the son of the late Artis Briggs and Annie Bell Pleasant Briggs, who survives. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and a truck driver for Thalle Construction and also owner of Wil lis Auto. Willis was a hig fan and sponsor for the WBAG Blue Grass Hour hosted by his longtime friend. Buddy Michaels. He was a member of Old Lea Bethel Bap tist Church, Roxboro. In addition to his wife of the home and mother of Burlington, survivors include his son, Wil lis Cleave Briggs, Jr. and wife Sherri of Graham; his daugh ter, Christina King “Tootle” and favorite son-in-law Ken of Burlington; two grandchildren, Courtney King “Scooter” and Timothy Briggs “Peanut”; his cherished niece and nephews, Angel Duggins, Lander Duggins and Frankie Duggins; and two dogs, Fred and Pepper. He was preceded in death by his brother, Artis Franklin Briggs “Big Fluff” A graveside service will be conducted at Alamance Memori al Park on Thursday Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Alan Bottoms. The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burl ington on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hospice League of Alamance- Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215. Condolences may be offered at www.richandthompson.com. Thomas Frank Harris Sr., age 84, formerly of 945 Jim Poole Road, died Friday afternoon, July 29, 2011 at Roxboro Nursing Center. Mr. Harris was a native of Per son County, and the son of the late Lemual Alfonzo and Mallie Oakley Harris and husband of 58 years to the late Dorothy Faye Jones Harris. He was owner of Frank Har ris garage, a member of Olive Branch Bap tist Church where he served as a deacon, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served during WWII. Surviving are two sons, Thom as Frank Harris, Jr. and wife, Kim of Burlington, Leamon Wes ley Harris and wife, Amy of Rox boro; a brother, Benjamin Harris and wife. Myrtle of Cedar Grove; two sisters, Jeanette Clark and husband. Tucker and Betty Jean Clack and husband, Charles, all of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Christy Harris Clayton and hus band, Jason, Hillary Harris Dil lard and husband, Raymond, Meredith Harris, Hunter Harris, and three great-grandchildren, Suzanne Clayton, Brittani Clay ton and Zaley Dillard. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Harris is preceded in death by a son, Danny Lee Har ris, a brother, Lee Alfonzo Har ris, and two sisters, Pearl Davis and Rachel Long. Funeral services were con ducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug.l, at Olive Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Victor Blackwell. Mary Satterfield Leach OXFORD — Mr. James Ray mond Nelson, age 83, of 9549 Hwy 96 North, Oxford, died Monday evening Aug. 1, 2011 at Bladen County Hospital. Mr. Nelson was a native of Person County, son of the late William Buck and Emma Wilson Nelson and husband of 62 years to Bessie Humphries Nelson. He was retired from Burlington Mills, in Clarksville, Va. as a ma chine mechanic. He was a mem ber and former deacon of Flor ence Avenue Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Betty Ann Seate and husband, Rich ard of Virgilina, Va. and Bon nie N. Reid and husband, Wayne of Oxford; two sons James Ray Nelson and wife, Connie of Ox ford and William Randall Nelson and wife, Alicia of Creedmore; a brother, William Roy Nelson and wife, Mary of Roxboro; two sisters Gertrude Kelley and hus band, James of Oxford and Anna Bell Alkins and husband, Vallie of Roxboro; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Mr. Nelson is preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Faye Nelson, a grandchild, Tommie Lee Martin, two great-grandchil dren, Thomas Seate and Colby Brankley and three sisters, Es ther Dixon, Edith Nelson and Lizzie Nelson. Funeral services will be con ducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Florence Avenue Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman Tal ley Interment will follow in the Virgilina Cemetery Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 3, from 6:30 un til 8:30 p.m. at Florence Avenue Baptist Church and other times at the home, 9549 Hwy 96 North, Oxford. Beverly Meloy Cavalier ROUGEMONT — Bennett Ed ward “Benny” Downey, age 57, of 215 Quail Roost Farm Rd. passed away peacefully Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the Select Specialty Hos pital in Durham. Born in Harris County, Texas, he was the son of the late Bennett Edward Downey, Sr. and Geral dine Powell Downey He was also preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Ike Downey. Mr. Downey had worked as a Quality Control Manager in the Construction Industry for 34 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #1304 in Channelview, Texas. Mr. Downey was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Judy A. Downey of the home; two daughters, Mori ah Phillips and husband Randy of Longview, Texas and Tonya Nishio and husband Joe of San Diego, Calif; one son Dr. M. Da vid Chambers and wife Melissa of Timberlake; one sister, San dra D. Haley and husband Bill of Bastrop, Texas; six grandchil dren, Allen Barrilleau, Blake Gatlin, Kyle Nishio, Skyler Bar rilleau, Noah Chambers and Micah Chambers; as well as a large and loving Antioch Baptist Church Family. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel. The Dr. M. David Cham bers will officiate. Burial will follow at Person Memorial Cem etery. Mary Churchill Satterfield Leach, 35, of 5501 Leasburg Rd., died Sunday, July 31,2011 at Duke Medical Center in Durham. She was born in Person County and was a landscape designer. She was a member of Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Her late father was Jim Satterfield. Mrs. Leach is survived by her husband, Nick Leach of the home; her son, Alex Solomon, of the home; her mother, Susan Merritt Satterfield of Roxboro; her brother, David Satterfield and wife, Lisa of Roxboro, one niece Grace Satterfield and one nephew James Satterfield. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
