I was sitting at my desk, working on a story when the slight tremor began. It lasted for several seconds, and varied in strength during that time period. I wasn’t sure what to think of it, and sat still at my desk, waiting to see what was going to happen. However, at the strongest point of the shak ing I began to nervously con template the possibility of our little office building collapsing on us. At that point I got up and walked to the front of the build ing, where I found several of my co-workers. By then the shaking had stopped. We were reassured that the CT staff wasn’t just imagining the whole thing when we stepped outside and saw employees of neighboring Taylor Business Products standing outside of their building wondering what had just happened. Not having much experience with earthquakes, I thought that maybe I should have moved to the front of the building soon er, so I could run outside if the earthquake had compromised the building. However, accord- GREY'S MATTER GREY PENTECOST ing to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), if indoors during an earthquake one should “drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops.” FEMA’s instructions also include, “Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.” So apparently staying at my desk was close to the right thing to do, even though I didn’t get under it. Right after the event occurred I googled “earthquake” and was amazed at how quickly informa tion is disseminated through technology The first search re sult was from the U.S. Geologi cal Survey and the main link read “Recent Earthquakes.” The line just beneath that header in- NEW LISTING!
